Re: The Official 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs Thread
As you can see below, most of the important Canucks are under contract for next season:
UFA: Salo, Rome, Pahlsson, plus 4th line junk (Bitz, Volpatti, Ebbett)
RFA (not including Schneider): Raymond, Gragnani, Weise
Salo will probably retire. Rome may be retained for cheap. Pahlsson's gone. 4th liners gone. Gragnani might be kept just for Gillis to avoid embarrassment of being fleeced by Buffalo. I'd let Raymond walk. He's a scorer who can't score.
So much to the chagrin of local sports radio callers, Vigneault and the non-goalie core (Sedins, Kesler, Burrows, Booth, Edler, Hamhuis, Bieksa) will probably get one more chance. Secondary players like Higgins, Lapierre, Hansen, maybe Malhotra, will be back. Tanev and Kassian will get full-time jobs. So basically 3rd/4th line, 3rd D-pairing tinkering. Hope Daniel's healthy, Kesler gets his head out of his ***. I think they need more scoring, but I'm not sure where it's coming from. I don't expect big changes in the offseason, to be honest, unless something big comes out of dealing Schneider, or if Gillis thinks his neck is on the block.
If the Canucks get off to a bad start next season, though, all bets are off. Vigneault's job is definitely on the line. I get the feeling that he was instrumental in Hodgson leaving town, as he didn't trust him defensively. The PP stalled shortly after the Bruins game in January, and never really got back on track. Lapierre did really well on the Henrik/Burrows line after Daniel went out, yet AV inexplicably put Raymond on the top line against the Kings. Gillis acquires players that AV doesn't play (Ballard, Kassian). He can't control (or does he encourage?) the diving BS that flares up when the pressure gets turned up, especially from top 6 forwards. What the hell is Kesler doing? He's supposed to be our Toews, not another Lapierre.
This is still a contender. But management has to address the REAL problems with this team, not media-fuelled BS about Luongo or "toughness".
BTW why did David Pratt "leave" Team 1040? I haven't listened to that station in over a year but I thought the Pratt and Taylor show was pretty interesting. I just googled his name and saw that he's now back on CKNW.

- It looks like I made a mistake on a earlier post about Melrose being the only NHL guy in studio. I found out Bruce Boudreau was also on ESPN.
- If anybody wants to laugh, listen to latest BS Report. Simmons called Shea Weber Shea Walsh and he basically described him as the guy that slammed the Red Wings players head in the glass. How in the world does a season ticket holder (Simmons is a Kings season ticket holder) not know who Shea Weber is? He also had to ask Joe House if the Bruins were playing tonight or tommorow night, lol.Comment

He's just slowly starting to get back into hockey after hardly watching this past decade (I know too much, lol) so it's kinda passable on his part. There's a reason he had Katie Baker carry most of the playoff preview podcast.Last edited by BlueNGold; 04-16-2012, 09:25 PM.Originally posted by bradtxmaleI like 6 inches. Uh he really wasn't. After Holtby made the save and held on and the one Capitals defenseman calmly keeps Lucic separated from Holtby, and the other caps d-man skates by him and Lucic throws an unprovoked punch.Comment

I also have the book and loved it. I pretty much love everything Simmons does (BS Report, Grantland, 30 for 30) but his NHL knowledge is questionable. I am glad that he came back to "following" the NHL after the lockout. He's the most popular sports writer in the United States and I do think he has the power to influence people.Comment
