Losing Shea Weber isn't going to lead to a relocation of the Nashville Predators. As long as they continue to operate as one of the best organizations in hockey, they'll be fine. 4 first round picks with a team that drafts as well as the Preds do isn't a bad trade-off for losing one of the best d-men in the league.

You could argue that Nashville would be in worse shape with Weber if they start to struggle. Not only are they losing attendance dollars, but they're stuck paying him an insane amount of money for the next five years.

The fan support will still be there as long as Nashville keeps making the playoffs.

The team is up to 7 playoff appearances in the last 8 seasons. People like to support a winner. Especially when the other pro sports team in the town has fallen off (Titans).

I wouldn't be worried about losing fans unless Nashville's record drops back to where it was during the early expansion years (bottom of the Western conference).

Without Weber, can the Preds even make the playoffs in the competitive West?

Also, I think Weber will be fine if he stays. As long as him and Rinne are there the Preds will always be a playoff contender.

I have faith that as long as Pekka Rinne is in net, the Predators can remain a contender. Plus this season, Nashville finally has a legit backup goalie in Chris Mason who can keep Rinne more rested -- the 73 games Rinne played in the regular season last year is a bit too much.

Weber honestly is a bit overrated defensively. His shot is his greatest asset as a defenseman.

There were many games last season where the defense in front of Pekka Rinne was awful, even with Weber and Suter logging 26 minutes of ice time a piece. Even though Weber is Nashville's captain, Rinne was the team's true MVP.

How is the fanbase there? Is it full of frontrunner-type people that only support them when they're winning or have they developed a decent number of diehards?

I agree with this. I think in the absence of Weber, as long as Rinne is in net, Nashville can be a "system" team and still get into the playoffs with a plug-and-play blueline.

Daniel Winnik signs with Anaheim for 2 years 1.8M AAV. Good deal with that price.

TJ Oshie re-signs with STL for 5 years 4.175M AAV.

Nikolai Kulemin re-signs with TML for 2 years 2.8M AAV. I expect him to get to 20~25 goals range, don't know what happen last year after scoring 30goals 2 years ago.

Sam Gagner re-signs with Edmoton, 1 year 3.2M. Not really a fan of him, but that's a good deal.

Also, wouldn't surprise me if Josi steps up this year and help Nashville a lot this year. He'll be the next good defensmen for Nashville along with Ellis.

For what it's worth (not much), incarceratedbob is saying the Predators are officially planning on not matching the deal, and that HockeyInsiderr guy is saying the Predators are talking about making a deal with the Flyers where they would send 2 of the 1st round picks back to Philly in return for players.

Re: The Official NHL 2012 Off-Season Thread

So it looks like Swedish Elite League defenseman of the year Mattias Ekholm is coming back to the Predators for next season:

Han fick utstå en offentlig totalsågning av Nashville-tränaren Barry Trotz. Nu ska Mattias Ekholm återvända till NHL och försöka ta en plats i laget som skickade tillbaka honom till Sverige. – Jag fick ett antal ursäkter, säger Ekholm till Dalarnas tidning.

If he plays as poorly as he did the last time they brought him over, he might end up spending more time in Nashville's AHL affiliate than in the Predators' lineup.

But Nashville is low on defensemen right now (only 5 currently under contract), so I guess they would rather promote someone from within their organization than go sign an outside player.

Rick Nash trade to New York Rangers in process now. Details to follow.

Will be multiple players involved in Nash trade to NYR. Contracts are being reviewed, etc. All to be done before trade call.

Anyone else think that this is a panic move by NYR after PHI MAY have gotten Weber?

                              Darren Dreger:

I'm told Rick Nash trade to NYR is done pending trade call. Stepan not included.

Columbus will get s pieces in return for Nash. Details to follow.
