And here I was thinking you guys were jumping the gun after Vancouver's Game 2 loss.

Crazy to think that all it would have taken was that missed empty netter by Hansen to make this a completely different series.

I think you mean 2011 Edler. You don't want this one.

        Silly me.

My first instinct was to like this post because of the humor....but the underlying sadness of it made me think otherwise.

There's quite literally no way he wouldn't be an upgrade over what Detroit has back there now, save for Kronwall.

Vigneault HAS to get fired after this, right?

This post made me look at the Wings roster. Jesus. No wonder Detroit almost didn't make the playoffs. Minnesota and Columbus flatter themselves thinking they were good scuffling with this Detroit team for a playoff spot.

Kyle Quincey and Brendan Smith is an actual top 4 d-man pairing that is played in the NHL?

Matt Hunwick is our #2 defender, I don't feel sorry for anyone else's defense.

If I was Canucks ownership I'd fire the entire management and coaching staff, first it was the Luongo debacle all season and now this with piss poor coaching by Vigneault.

I do say, the Canucks need to blow everything up.

Henrik Sedin gets roughed up in the crease, Kassian skates in and gets swarmed while Henrik and Daniel skate away with their backs to the scrum.

They've been pretty soft for YEARS.

The Canucks are a finesse team in a league that has gotten grittier.

I'm holding my breath hoping this year was just a sophomore slump for Smith. If he's this bad next year, I'll be ready to give up on him.

But after that.....yeah...gave up a first round pick for Quincey. Jonathan Ericsson is on the top pairing with Kronwall. Kindl is a bust. The revolving door of Lashoff/White/Colaiacovo is just worthless.

It's bad enough that all of those guys are "defensive" defensemen when the Wings have relied on puck-moving defensemen to properly execute the breakout pass for 20 years now. But those "defensive" defensemen are liable to give the puck up in their own zone if they get sneezed on.

Losing Nick Lidstrom, Brad Stuart and Brian Rafalski over two offseasons was bound to take its toll, but the dropoff has been startling. Said it before and I'll say it again (and likely keep saying it for the duration of his contract in Minnesota): failing to land Ryan Suter last summer will haunt the Red Wings for years to come.

The league has been "gritty" for years. It was "gritty" when the Canucks entered their current window and when they got to a SCF game 7.

Not surprising, but when their team is on the brink of collapse they can't, you know, do something out of the ordinary? Even Phil Kessel will joust and tie a guy up in scrums come playoff time.

I do feel for Gillis a bit. He inherited the Luongo contract, and if he had sold for market value before the season he probably would have been ripped by the fan base and media about it, and doubly so if Schneider was only mediocre.

In the end though, his game of brinkmanship with other GM's played out in the most disastrous way it could. The team did a bellyflop, goaltending everywhere else but Florida stabilized, the Canucks core appears hopelessly psychologically frail come playoff time, and Luongo's value is now zero while his contract remains an albatross for the organization.
