Reasons like that are why NHL needs to just have win% and not points. Or if they do keep points, do the whole 3 for regulation win,2 for OT win and 1 for OT loss. And NO SHOOTOUTS.
Going to 10 minutes of 3-on-3 OT and getting rid of the loser point (for OT and shootout) would effectively do the same thing. Shootouts would still happen, but rarely.

The Pat Quinn Leafs ceremony was cheesy as hell, but damn if it wasn't great.

The Quinn Leafs were also my best memories of being a Leafs fan. I was a kid when they had the Gilmour teams in the early 90's, but the 1998-2003 Leafs under Quinn brought me so much joy coming out of the Nick Beverly/Mike Murphy days. Rarely missed a Leafs game during my teenage years.

I don't mind the current 4 vs. 4 then shootout format, but the points system is definitely screwed up right now.

          It should be:

3 points for a regulation win
2 points for an OT win
1 point for a shootout win
          0 points for a loss

The current points system basically just exists to make the standings closer than they should be and keep as many teams in the hunt for a playoff birth as possible.

There are way too many people in high up places within the game that will never allow three points for a win given how it will skew historical statistics. The point system you listed is the obvious answer, and its been suggested for year. It always comes down to heritage trumps.

2 points for a regulation or OT win. 1 point for a shootout win. No points for any type of loss.

So does Todd Richards make it to 2015 before he's fired?

Or do they give him a pass for the injuries and then fire him around this time next year?

Sharks go up 5-1 so the Ducks start gooning it up. Some things never change.

Barrie has 18 points in 24 games. He's putting up the numbers I expected Stefan Elliott to do. When you need a defenseman, draft one from Kelowna Rockets. They have a nice history.

The Kane Versteeg Richards line is gelling pretty well.

Carbomb played like a man possessed tonight. 5-1 on the circus trip is outstanding.

Sabres got 4 points on a B2B with Montreal and have seemed much more competent in recent games.

All the "tanker" losers are freaking out. Good.

So I can respect what he meant to that organization and hockey in general. And can't forget that he was on "our" side for a while too.

The Kelowna Rockets do seem to make some great defenemen. Hopefully Severson won't be leaving any time soon.

It's funny because that era started with Toronto pulling a huge first round playoff upset en route to the Conference Finals before losing to Buffalo in 99 I think.

But yeah, Philly gave it back in '04, and put the Quinn era Leafs saw time run out on them with that loss.
