Elliot Friedman and Damian Cox were discussing the possibility of raising the draft eligible age to 19.
The NHL, CHL, and NHLPA are looking into this.
The last few years, I've been a big proponent for this change. I'd actually prefer they raise it to 20 like it was before and prior to the WHA forcing their hand.
I think more prospects will be NHL ready and can step in right away. Not only does this make the draft more valuable, but it gives the fans a reason to get excited as they should see immediate dividends on that years draft.
But I also like it because it allows kids to finish highschool at home with their family and friends.
The CHL will hate this because it means the NCAA becomes a more viable option.
If your child can't start their Major junior career until they're 18 or 19, then why not let them get a full-ride scholarship to a Div 1 team.
As a parent (and one who will never have to worry about this), if my son had a choice between the CHL and NCAA, I'd pick NCAA every time. Four year scholarship and diploma from an esteemed educational institute?? Yes please!
For people worrying about players such as Crosby or McDavid having to wait an additional year or two before making it to the NHL - when they're clearly ready for the Show - just put in a clause that states you can draft an 18YO but they must be on the NHL roster and cannot be sent down to the AHL during their entry-level contract.
So if teams want an 18YO, go for it. But you better be sure he's ready to play immediately.
The same can be said for the CHL. You can still draft a 16YO (no more 15YO's please), but they must have exceptional status.
This should help capture any generational talents like Crosby, Tavares, etc.. so they make it to the CHL or NHL earlier.
But for the rest, like Max Domi or Dylan Strome, they'd remain in the CHL until they turn 19 (or 20 in my fantasy).
