    Re: NHL Off-Topic thread

    This quote says it all:
All it requires is that Mr. Bettman and his colleagues put aside their lawyerly concerns, and begin to think about this like people.
Would be nice, but won't happen. Players are commodities, not human beings.

The NHLPA isn't innocent in this either.
In some of the emails, the PA was/is against getting rid of the Enforcer role.
They need to bend on that too.

Just ban fighting already. No 5 min sitdown. Just make it so if you fight, you get kicked out of the game and an additional 5 games.
But if they do that, they need to make sure all the stick work and shenanigans on the ice are removed as well. Head shots = auto 5 games on first infraction, 10 on 2nd, 15 on 3rd, etc, etc.
And just make it so if your stick touches a players body, it's a stick infraction. There goes all the slashes and whacks each skater takes a dozen times a shift.

    Just saw that on Twitter.
Reading Vesey's Players Tribune article, he kind of insinuates that the Preds were really pushing for him to leave Harvard at the end of last year.
Maybe the way they did that rubbed him the wrong way.
Or maybe it's just another case of a kid that doesn't want to play for a certain team.

The NHL needs to close that loophole, or at the very least, compenstate teams with a draft pick.
Vesey was selected in the 3rd, so Boston should give up their 3rd round pick to them this Spring.
If Vesey turns out to be as good as expected, that's a pittance. But it's better than nothing. And I'm sure Anaheim would have been very pleased to get their pick back for Schutlz.

I disagree with you on both points. And I won't agree with on fighting until you get rid every headshot artist in the league. So just going to leave that at that because I'm not changing my stance on that.

But onto the Vesey/compensation issue. No they shouldn't. They have had 3 years to sign him. If you can't come to an agreement, the kid should be able to sign where he wants without penalty to his new team. And this isn't a loophole either. It was something that was negotiated for during one of the CBA negotiations. I don't know which one but it was. This happens all the time to most kids that go to college. The only thing that is different about the Vesey situation is that his father said Jimmy was going to sign after this college season. Like you said it happened with Schultz, it's happened with other guys as well like Blake Wheeler, Mike Reilly, and some others I forget. And it probably won't be the last time it happens either.

The problem with your argument is two-fold.

        1. Lets fight rape with more rape. The idea is to prevent head trauma. So we're supposed to combat head trauma by dishing out more head trauma?

        2. Fighting does absolutely nothing to deter cheapshtos and head hunters.
I could probably fill this thread with names in the past decade that continued to hurt, maim, and injure even after having to 'answer' the bell.
Matt Cooke is probably the only name I really need to mention as he continued to kill guys even after he ended Marc Savard's career and 'paid the price' by fighting Shawn Thornton.
It wasn't until he got a 17-game suspension that he changed his ways.

There was a very interesting article that proved fighting does nothing.
In one year, the Bruins had the most fighting majors but also the most man games lost to injuries induced by 'rat' cheapshots.

The only thing fighting does is entertain the masses and provide an NHL roster spot for a talent-less caveman to drag his knuckles onto the ice for 2 minutes a night.

I don't know how common it is but looking at the standings it seems to me there's no argument to be made that "if team X played in the east they'd have made the playoffs but since they are in the west they don't make it and crappy team X does"

What crappy team is making the playoffs in the East besides Boston? The Red Wings only made the playoffs 24 straight years. Flyers, playing pretty damn well right now.

To me all the teams in the hunt for the playoffs seem OK.

I didn't say a crappy team was making it. I said nobody could argue that a team that didn't make it this would have made it in the opposite conference

Like Team X had 95 PTS and missed the west playoffs while Team Y had 83 PTS and made it into the East playoffs.

That isn't the case this year because as of right now it takes 87 PTS in each conference

Same drug, meldonium, as Maria Sharapova and many other athletes. It was not on a list of banned substances before 1st of January 2016.

But this could effect draft positions of Rubtsov and some other guys playing in MHL. Also their reputation is shot.

But I think we all know that athletes use substances that help them regenerate or are performance boosters. Backstrom was caught at Olympics, for a medicine prescribed by his Capitals doctor, which was not allowed under WADA rules, but was allowed in NHL.

I would still draft Rubstov in the 2nd round.

I would draft him around 15-20, he was really good in Russian games I saw, that was last autumn.

And yeah, it is going to be really interesting to see how it develops, especially because it is supposed to be a weaker draft.

You know Washington will draft him and then turn him into a great player. They're good at doing this while other teams pass on a player because of the Russian factor.

Well Tampa could do it too, and they might need a new C soon

Or Detroit, they could use another Russian guy now that Datsyuk is close to retirement.
