Re: The Official 2019-20 Season Talk Thread

Melnyk announced he's gonna pay the arena employees impacted by this. Surprising given how cheap people say he is.

Now reports saying the first hockey player to get the virus is from the Sens.

Any connection here? Did he offer to pay because he knew someone tested positive?

Well if he doesn't pay he won't have any employees when/if this is all over.

I hope more of those that have in todays society decides to help those that don't. When this is over a lot will probably be different...

Re: The Official 2019-20 Season Talk Thread

Pens and Caps seem to be fine if season resumes with the playoffs right away.

Caps would love that since they're the 1 seed in their division by a single point, and same number of games played as 2nd place Philly.

Pens interestingly enough are in 3 seed so they'd be on the road. Although the Canes are 5 points back with a game in hand, so things could've gotten close as the season ended.

If playoffs start right away, we'd have:
        Leafs vs Lightning
        Flyers vs Pens
        Caps vs Canes
Bruins vs Jackets (Jackets have more points than Devils, but a lower point %)

        Avs vs Stars
        Oilers vs Flames/Canucks
        Vegas vs Flames/Canucks/Jets/Preds
        Blues vs Flames/Canucks/Jets/Preds

Which provides for a complicating decision. Do we go based on point percentage, or current points? If its point percentage, Devils get in over Jackets, Canucks get 3rd division seed, and Flames despite having more points than Canucks/Jets/Preds, go from 3 spot in division go completely out of playoffs, and Preds who are the 9 seed right now, get the top WC spot.

So....assuming the season gets cancelled, the Red Wings just get the first pick in the draft, then? Or, come to think of it, even if the season doesn't get cancelled they'll get the first pick....

There has to be a draft lottery one way or the other.

If season doesn't continue, probably draft lottery the same format as past few years?

If season continues straight into the playoffs, I wonder if we see that lottery tournament rumored. Wouldn't be bad idea. That way fans of all teams still get to see meaningful hockey.

Not sure how a 15 team tournament would go for the lottery pick. Maybe 1 game elimination bracket style (either best or worst team gets the bye?). I'd go the ultimate reverse. Wings get BYE as the "1 seed" and matchups are determined based on reverse standings. So Sens as 2nd worst team ends up as the 2 seed and gets home ice vs the Islanders (who would be the best team to not make playoffs and are designated the 15 seed)

So how does that work? The winner of the tournament gets the top pick? If so that's backwards. I'd venture toguess that the 17th best team in the standings is much better than the teams at the bottom.

The purpose of the lottery is to discourage teams from tanking but the general point of the draft system is for worse teams to pick higher. If the top pick goes to a team that has won a 15 team tournament, it kind of defeats the purpose...

Which is why I said they should do reverse standings to determine home ice.

The better teams have to play most if not all games on the road. While the worse teams get most of not all games at home.

The Wings have 12 wins at home, the fewest among non playoff teams. The Rangers have 19 road wins, the most among non playoff teams.

So for the most part, we're getting matchups where the bad teams have good shots to win. In the NHL especially, teams can win on any given night. Wings suck, but they've beaten Tampa,Boston,Edmonton,Vegas and others.

While your idea does somewhat alleviate my concern, I still feel it doesn't do enough. You're still creating a scenario where better teams are likely to draft higher.

Teams that sucked for most of a whole season will wind up drafting mid-round because they still sucked in that tournament, despite having home ice advantage. If anything, these teams getting beat in the first round of this draft lottery tournament would confirm they should be drafting higher. So it still sounds counter productive to me.

Good teams can still win the lottery as well. Look at the teams in the top 3 the past few years compared to where they finished.

It is still less likely than in a tournament.

The City of Toronto just announced all public events are cancelled until June 30. I guess you could argue a Leafs game is a private event but considering the thousands of people who would generally use public transportation and walk on crowded streets to get to the games, I think it's safe to say there's no way the City of Toronto would allow a Leafs game to happen with a crowd before June 30 after cancelling other events.

Doesn't mean they couldn't play a closed game in Toronto but it just shows you how unlikely it is that the NHL will be able to restart the season.

They could still have closed arena games, but banning large public events until end of June does signify the end for sure.

They cancelled the Pride parade, closed schools until at least May, and no doubt will cancel Caribana in the coming weeks. Probably the CNE eventually too.

Sports is far from peoples minds when they talk about holding public events. At this point, regular life has to resume before they think about bringing back sports.

I think we might have to accept this season is over. I wish it wasn't the case but there is absolutely nothing indicating normal life for months to be honest... Look at italy, it's not like their curve is pointing down yet...

If this goes on for a year perhaps they can finish the season next year. Feel bad for Ovie, he would have had 50 this year to reach Gretz in 50 goal seasons and the chance of beating the scoring record is history if we are loosing something like a season.

But still, pretty secondary right now. I miss the hockey though... It would have helped to keep the mind off the corona for a while...
