Hall and Eichel together will be crazy. Probably why he chose Buffalo. Even if team sucks, he could boost his numbers for a year and then cash in.

Re: NHL 2020 Offseason
Pietrangelo signs in Vegas. 7 years, 8.8 M per. I wonder how they're gonna shed cap now that they've lost leverage. Fleury and Peyton Krebs to Detroit for Bernier w/ salary retained (too much to hope for)? More likely they trade Nate Schmidt.
Montreal adds Toffoli. 4 years, 4.25 M per. This doesn't change the fact that Montreal lacks elite scoring talent, but this should help. A lot of their upcoming season is going to rely on how their young center tandem of Suzuki and Kotkaniemi develop.
Devon Toews has some crazy good possession numbers. Depending on how Colorado uses him, I bet he could get 40-50 points.Last edited by rdnk; 10-12-2020, 07:37 PM.Comment

Re: NHL 2020 Offseason
AP for 8.8M in Vegas!
Now I'm real glad Leafs didnt get him. That's close to 10m if he were to sign here. No way that could've happened.
I wonder if Seattle would inquire about a "handshake deal" a year from now (when are they officially allowed to make deals?). Take Fleury in his final year from whoever acquires him from Vegas. So you get Fleury and a 2nd for just 1 season of him, then deal him to Seattle for another pick, no salary retained on your part.
Vegas already dealt Schmidt to Canucks for a 3rd, no salary retained.Comment

Re: NHL 2020 Offseason
Leafs could have interest in Thornton. There was a plan a few years back for him and Marleau to come together, but Thornton stayed.
Perhaps he ends his career close to his hometown?
A bottom 6 with Spezza,Thornton,Simmonds would be big. Sign Thornton hopefully at a hometown discount (he signed for 2m last year in SJ, so perhaps he'll go cheaper) and you got those 3 for under 4m. Kerfoot becomes expandable.
Speaking of retaining salary, looks like Vegas plan to retain salary and unload Fleury has failed and they're not trading Fleury...for now. And Lehner undergoing surgery. Maybe a "try again next year" plan? At the deadline or simply let Seattle take him. That'd be funny. Has a guy ever been selected in multiple expansion drafts?Comment

Re: NHL 2020 Offseason
Deal with Thornton is finalized. 700k for 1 year. Great deal for the Leafs.
The team formation is reminding me more of what you see in the NBA when teams spend lots on a few core guys, fill out rest of team with vets on these small deals.
I'd sign him...to a playoff only deal.Comment

Re: NHL 2020 Offseason
Yeah with him and Thornton, they could be the slowest team in the NHL.
I suppose this is the best they can do with the cap staying flat and the way the team's cap structured, but I'm not sure it's gonna work out. Simmonds and Thornton looked washed last year. Vesey is soft. There is no long term downside to this strategy, but it could amount to a wasted year when a different sort of player on a minimum could have been more effective.
I like the Brodie move, should be a better fit than Barrie. I'm not a huge fan of Bogosian, but he's miles better than Ceci.
That said, I could be full of garbage. Toronto might end up like Washington, winning the year after they were expected to with a lesser team. Toronto may add a few more bargains or make another move before the offseason is done.Comment

Re: NHL 2020 Offseason
I never realized Thornton could actually be the oldest skater in Leafs history. He'd be the oldest if the season goes into August.
And an interesting story. While he was deciding on where to play, he called a friend to help make his decision. Surprisingly it WASN'T Marleau, it was Joe Montana. Weird choice to call when making a hockey decision. Apparently it was regarding Montana going from SF to KC.Last edited by Majingir; 10-19-2020, 02:19 PM.Comment

Re: NHL 2020 Offseason
Doc Emrick announced his retirement.
2 big voices in hockey are gone in back to back years.
Bob Cole in 2019 and Doc Emrick in 2020. Both were part of some of the biggest moments in hockey history.
Not just in hockey but broadcasting/commentary as a whole I feel like the quality is declining. This isn't a nostalgia thing, but many commentators whether it be in NHL,NBA,MLB and so on, I feel like the older guys typically have the "better voice" for calling the action.
Most of the newer guys feel so bland and generic.Comment
