Context is important when evaluating upsets. The Panthers had the best record in the league last year. For example, when the Sharks beat the Wings in '94*, despite "only" an 18-point difference, it seemed beyond belief.

Ah, yes, the 1996 St. Louis. They had Wayne Gretzky, Glenn Anderson, Brett Hull, Grant Fuhr, Al MacInnis and Chris Pronger. And Mike Keenan behind the bench. So weird.

Andrew Brunette managing to get essentially fired after winning the Presidents' Trophy and the first playoff series for Florida since 1996 was pretty crazy. Then he followed that up with a golf cart DUI.

MacKinnon thought he tied it with another rocket (that didn't go off Rantanen's *** this time), but it's reviewed and overturned due to clear offside.

This has been one crazy day of playoff hockey: The President's Trophy winner and reigning Stanley Cup champion knocked out by Florida and Seattle respectively.

Avs broke the 2nd round curse last year but couldn't beat the game 7 curse this year.

Not a surprising result, team was flawed all year.

Most recent Cup winner remaining: Hurricanes (17 years).
Last time the QF featured 8 teams with title droughts of 17+ years: 1994 (I think)

This Florida team reminds me of that Wings team that traded Coffey for Shanahan

Wings won the President in I think 96, were labeled finesse, made the trade, next year won the cup

Panthers won the President last year, traded for Tkachuk...

Darryl Sutter is the unsung hero of this series for making all of Calgary's stars want out.

What a night of game 7's!!! I didn't think both games would be upsets. Especially the Panthers-Burins game. That was insane how they tied it up. Hopefully the Rangers-Devils game is just as good.

The Leafs winning set off a chain of crazy events.

And from the Leafs/Panthers series, we're guaranteed at least 1 team in the conference finals who hasn't been there since at least 2002 (Kraken technically on this list too, so we could have 2 of the 4 conference finals teams who haven't been there in decades if ever before)

Speaking of which, can't believe Leafs/Panthers starts tomorrow!

Fans go from cheering on the Panthers on Sunday night to now on Monday looking ahead to the series tomorrow. It's still the Leafs, anything can happen, but they need to take care of business now. They're in a dangerous spot where they could be the 2nd best team left in the playoffs and a possible path to the cup consisting of all home ice advantage.

Understandably the Panthers blocked access to tickets to all Canadian addresses.

But we know so many of these older/rich Leaf fans are in Florida (or have a US address), so they'll get around it and it'll be crazy for gm3/4 with almost home crowd too.

Yeah, the snowbirds should have plenty of workarounds for this ban, but I guess it had to be done.

I would love to beat Toronto. Hell, seeing that stat about the '06 Hurricanes, maybe Eric Staal can win another Cup (yes, he's still playing).

But in reality, just ruining the Bruins' season feels like a win for this team with little expectations.
