Speaking of international events, looks like next month we could see an announcement on the world cup of hockey in 2028.

It will be strictly an NHL event with likely no IIHF involvement.

While it's tempting to rant for 10,000 words, I'll just leave it at this: I hold Rutherford & Allvin 99% responsible for the Miller/Pettersson fiasco. The opportunity was there to trade either from a position of strength, but they chose to re-sign both, and (bizarrely) have apparently done everything possible to kill their trade value. A grand total of 15 centres have scored 100 points in a season since the start of the "New NHL" era 20 years ago. The Canucks have 2 of them currently under contract and are going to sell one for pennies on the other while the other is going to receive 10x the scrutiny in a toxic market, and neither can handle it. I don't understand any of this.

US anthem at the Leafs game....once it was over I'd say 80% of people were dead silent, 5% clapped, 15% booed.

The NHL would be wise not to play anthems at the Four Nations Event. The booing in Montreal for USA-Canada on Feb. 15 won't be helpful for international relations and it won't be just 15 per cent.

It's carrying over into the NBA too which I think will spark real controversy since the Raptors are the only Canadian team.

Canada vs USA in Montreal is definitely going to be interesting with or without the anthems. Might be one of the rare instances where the story is what's happening off the ice more than what's happening on the ice.

180 minutes of scoreless Flyers “action” at a crucial part of the season. I guess better to collapse now than in the final 10-12 games like last year. Let’s get a jump start on next season.

I hope this doesn’t come off badly, but a little extra bit of nastiness in this tourney I’m not opposed to. The US, Finns and Swedes are all outmatched by the Canadian’s roster, so this extra bit of intensity could translate to some good hockey. I hope that’s the extent of it.

I'll pass on that, thanks. I'm not above using "sports hatred" to gin up excitement (the US is pretty much Canada's "big bad" from a sporting perspective at the best of times, even if Americans are unaware of this), but this is pretty personal on our end. At best, Canada is being threatened with economic blackmail and the loss of tens of thousands of jobs; at worst, our sovereignty is under attack.

This isn't 1972 or 1980, there is no figurative Cold War victory to be had here. Americans are literally my friends and family. (And in Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Toronto's cases, our best players.) What the US government is doing is seen here as a gigantic betrayal and puts Canada in existential danger, even though we're well aware that (I hope) most Americans think this is a mistake. I'd rather this event be cancelled altogether if its "spiciness" further degrades the relationship between our countries. I don't want to see Americans being physically threatened up here or vice versa.

On a much less important topic, the US is definitely not outmatched by Canada. The US are current (small) favourites in Vegas to win the 4 Nations - Canada has better forwards, USA has a better D corps and have a huge goaltending advantage. None of the 3 Canada goalies are in the NHL's top 20 in GAA or SV% - hell, none of them are among the top 5 Canadian goalies this season. Yes, it's possible that McDavid, MacKinnon, and Makar are barely enough to clear this tourney (especially if playoff Hellebuyck makes a timely appearance), but it's equally likely that Binnington or Adin Hill craps the bed entirely and we don't even make the final.

I hear ya and I appreciate your measured response on the matter. Like you mentioned, people may and will get hurt (directly and indirectly) over this, and that wasn’t on my mind when giving my stupid sports take.
