Tips for getting Iron Shots in Air
Does anyone have any good tips for getting your iron shots in the air? It seems like everytime I play I hit a fat shot and then I get frustrated. My friends say hit down on the ball but that is not working. ???Tags: None -
Re: Tips for getting Iron Shots in Air
Hitting down on the ball is exactly what I was going to say. One thing I was always taught was you have to hit down on the ball to get it airborn. I never knew what that meant when I first started playing, but I do now. Don't try to lift the ball - that doesn't work. Also make sure you keep your head down. A lot of times people lift their heads and wind up "topping" the ball.
My best advice is practice. Go to the driving range and see if you can fix whatever is ailing you. You also might want lessons. I've never had them, but some of my friends said they help a lot. -

No problem.
Without seeing your swing, it's tough to offer real good advice. Golf is a very tough sport so practice is usually the best way. There are just so many things that go into a golf swing that trying too many of them will just make matters worse. So just swing easy at a driving range and get a feel for the ball getting airborn off your club. Then try your regular swing.
I was also always taught to take the club back easy and then really accelerate on your downswing. That's what I try to do. Only problem is I run into issues where I get my body in front of my hands and that's no good.
Anyhow, best of luck. Golf's a very fun game, but very difficult to master.Comment

Re: Tips for getting Iron Shots in Air
Just think about hitting the ball before you hit the ground. Don't try to pick it of the grass...just think about hitting the ball and then making a divot. This will get the ball high and create lots of spin.Comment

Also TEMPO, TEMPO, TEMPO! Take your club back nice and slow and swing the same speed through the ball. It may sound crazy but it is the best way to hit consistant shots.Comment

Still have to figure out my distances for each club (I'd leave it a little short sometimes, hence no attempts at birdie at all), but I'm happy with that. I'm still improving, and by the end of that round I was flyin' high, especially compared to the first 9. Consistancy is my problem...hate when you just flub a shot randomly. Just keep up with it, go to the range and hit lots of balls. That'll help you figure out what you need to do.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: Tips for getting Iron Shots in Air
my best tip i have is take a shorter back swing. When you take a full blown back swing, there is more chance of error and getting your hands and hips and body out of place. You will find that shorter, 1/2 -3/4 swings will go just as far as a full swing becuase the contact with the ball will be better and more precise. I have been playing about 3 years now and can consistantly break 80 once i realized that golf is not a power game, at least not when you play most public courses."Basketball may have been born in Massachusetts, but it grew up in Indiana." - James NaismithComment
