Hey guys...totally new the Links series. I preordered TW 07, but is this game worth a look at? What courses are in this game and how does it play compared to the TW series? Thanks!

Definitely worth a look at. Plays better than any console TW, looks better than any current gen TW by a country mile. I remember when I first played it way back when and just being amazed how this game looked back then.

What is everyone's (veterans of the game) consensus?
I've got my player currently set to 5/4/3/3, and at times I feel like he's too skilled. I can barely break par at Aviara with him though, and I shudder to think of what I'd do with him at Ocean's Mill, Directors Cut. I think I'm going to lock it in with what I've got. At the most, I'd say limit your power to 5, and maybe bring your putting up to 2 or 3. Leave everything else at 1.

PK's recommendation of 7 total points is probably the best best for the long run though. I'll reach a point where I wish I could take some points away from my guy. I've had the game for almost three years now, and I never made my way through the entire career mode. With the new life the hi-res of the b/c has given the game for me, I plan to achieve that goal now.

The problem you're going to run into online though is you'll see a lot of guys with maxed out skill levels. They birdie just about every hole and eagle at least two of the pars. It's not as ridiculous as what you find in Tiger Woods console versions online though.

When you say 5/4/etc...do you mean bars? I should only put 5 power bars, 3 control...like that?

This was a great post...lots of info. I'm not really into online...but I just don't like the idea of a perfect drive everytime. I am going to start over with an advanced player and see what happens.

This should hold me over until to TW07...hopefully they have fixed it from last year.

I really just want an enjoyable single player game...that's all.

Yes, exactly! 5 - power, 4 - control(one by way of going with medium-steel shaft clubs that I bought), 3-recovery, and 3 - putting "bars" is what I have.

I hope TW 2007 brings something new to the table in gameplay difficulty this year. It's such a good looking game on the 360. I didn't realize just how devoid of feel its interface was until I started back playing Links 2004 seriously again.

You mentioned how frustrating it is to hit the fairway everytime, or hit your drives straight. Let me give you an example of what happened in my 18 hole tournament in the pro level of my career mode. There's a par 5 at Loch Lomand, where a tree juts out about 150 yards on the left side of the fairway. The wind was blowing left to right and if I had hit my tee shot to where it would just miss that tree, the wind would have carried it into deep rough, or possibly on the beach on the right side.

I aimed right center and used the right stick to play some hook, to hold the ball against the cross wind. When you try to play hook or slice with low control ratings, the swingpath errors you make are penalized much heavier. I literally shanked the ball at a 45 degree angle when I tried to play this shot because my tracking was off. I went into the hazard and had to play another shot. Wound up double-bogeying the hole. I was in the lead at the time, and wound up finishing tied for third, mostly because of that double bogey. I wouldn't change anything about the way the game handles that.... I was really plussed by this experience - quite believable!

You guys are really making we want to check this game out. Especially since Gamestop has it used for $7. This game sounds like a lot of fun, and would definitely hold me over until TW 07.

You may find you don't need TW07 after picking up this game...Heck, even the skill challenges are enough for me to waste 3-4 hours playing...

For 7 bucks, it's well worth a blind buy IMO. I'll keep it regardless of whether I get Tiger or not because it's such a good game.

Yes all the courses are real I believe. The only one I'm unsure about is Ocean's Mill.

How many courses are there? Real golfers too?

I counted 12 if you count the three downloadable courses so there's more than the current Tiger and equal to what Tiger 07 will have. As far as real golfers, I think it has Anika, Mike Weir, Sergio Garcia, Jesper and a few others.

Yes, all courses are real, with the exception of Ocean's Mill.

By the way, did they ever come out with an expansion disc or something that has all the downloadable courses on it? I would totally pay $15 or whatever for the extra courses on a disc, but I just don't have XBox Live (nor do I intend to get it, since I had it way back in the day and used it like 1 time in 3 months). Just wondering - I'm just trying to find a way to get the other courses without having to sign up for XBox Live.
