I'm thrilled about a 3 click swing myself for the reasons you mentioned. On the XBOX version I could drive straight and true most all the time, but it seems that the analog sticks on the 360 are so much more sensitive that I go either left or right each time.

Re: Updated IGN TW 2008 Preview (06/18/07)
I with MGO. Since TW is really only game in town they just said to hell with the swing stick and we are going back 10 years.
Three clicks is ok as an option but not as a feature.
Why can we be so precise with the stick in games like Forza or Dirt, yet there's a huge sweet spot in TW. No competition has meant that this game has been stagnating for the last few years.
EA doesn't seem to understand they could please both the hardcore user and the casual game that wants to hit the 350 yards every time with a Tour mode that had a swing sensitivity slider. Let us adjust how hard we want the game. If we set the slider to very sensitive it would very hard to hit it straight. This doesn't mean that the ball is a wild slice that is OB. It just means the balls is going to fade or draw according to the slight miss.
MGO is right, this is a step backwards. Sure everyone will race, the 3 click is realistic. It was in golf games that ended in 486.
With headgate, the studio that did PGA Championship, going to work on Wii controls I think that spells bad news for TW. Obviously they've run out of ideas over there.Comment

Re: Updated IGN TW 2008 Preview (06/18/07)
I don't mind the 3-click method at all, if implemented properly. Don't do the hotshots thing and put a line (on the power meter) to where I need to hit for perfect distance everytime.
Just give me at 0-100 power, with maybe a 50 percent line in there, and make me figure it out myself. Don't hold my hand and put an optimal power indicator at 78 percent if that's how much power for the current club selection I need to use.
I'm not going to lie here. One of my favorite golf games of all time is the original PGA Tour (by EA Sports) back in the mid to late 90's. The gameplay it that bad boy was near perfect on both the Genesis and PC.Comment

being it is ea...you can count on an ez way to hit the shot perfect..actually if they add no more of the gameplay to what has been announced..this may be the first year i just do not buy it....Comment

Same here, PGA Tour on the Genesis was the perfect golf game for me. I loved the series and I haven't enjoyed a golf game since.Comment

Re: Updated IGN TW 2008 Preview (06/18/07)
I don't care what anyone says, 3-click is superior to the stupid swing stick. If it were up to me I would pitch every right stick EA "feature" out the window and consider it a net gain. Stupid and gimmicky.
Edit - And not 0-100 on a 3-click, it needs to go to 105 or 110 or something so there's a risk reward for trying for extra power. Knowing EA they would make 110% go another 70 yards further off the tee though... dig dig.Last edited by ComfortablyLomb; 06-26-2007, 08:12 PM.Comment

Re: Updated IGN TW 2008 Preview (06/18/07)
Links was pretty good. It could have been improved. EA sports could offer a more sensitive right stick but they worry kids will be turned off and won't buy their game.
Done right it could be a great feature. Done wrong, well it's been done wrong since TW came out with it.Comment

Re: Updated IGN TW 2008 Preview (06/18/07)
Same here, but the swing stick in TW 2006 & 2007 has far less touch than I think it could have. Links 2004 on the XBox had considerable more feel with its swing stick. I think this was due to the fact that there was at least a token attempt at momentum/inertial modelling in it. There are no intertial constraints in Tiger Woods 06/07's swing, which is why it feels "dead" in terms of interaction with the animation. You can start, pause, and start the swing on a dime... there's no response lag or momentumThe only feel comes from the movement of the stick itself.
Now that we have analog sticks that can detect minute motions, why not take advantage of them?
It's like a racing wheel vs. the d-pad for driving, you can really get a feel for things if it's done well. IMO Tiger's isn't done well though, but a swing stick is far from gimmicky.
Granted, Tiger Woods 07 doesn't have a special force-feedback controller option like Forza 2. However, Forza 2 still does a great job of modelling real-life, inertial physics into its analog stick controls.... why can't Tiger Woods 2008 do this??Last edited by OnlookerDelay; 06-27-2007, 10:28 AM.Duke Football? Maybe they spend to much time with getting your face on the character! For them to do these things and make it a bit harder and more realistic they are afraid to lose a big portion of the crowd. Too bad we cannot just tell Tiger himself to tell EA.. :-) Or when these game sites..gamespot or IGN do the interviews..have them ask these questions instead of the ridiculous ones.Comment

Re: Updated IGN TW 2008 Preview (06/18/07)
I don't know, even though I fouind TW07 to be lacking in certain areas, it was a huge step in the right direction from years past. If not for the rubber-band A.I. in the Season Mode, I would play it more.
The aiming marker being a circle instead of a pinpoint marker made a world of difference. The game was challenging. I would play almost any course, save for St. Andrews, on Very Fast and Hard greens, Hard fairways, Deep rough and Expert pin positions and struggle to shoot par. Big step up from last-gen TW games.
I would love to see the ball-cam go. I would love to see them making chipping realistic (distance not determined by club. I can chip a ball 20ft with my LW or my 5-iron in real life. Not in Tiger). I would love to see them make the putting stroke more realistic, though it too is much improved over year's past. And I would love to see the lie percentages be more consistent, which right now there is a distance-glitch where at times, even though it says you'll only get 71-78% power, you hit it 100%.
But I have a great time playing it. Not as great a time as Links 2003 and TW2004 on the PC, but MUCH better than any console game since Links 2004.Comment

Re: Updated IGN TW 2008 Preview (06/18/07)
Oddly enough, the problem isn't the result, it's that it occurs without the game explicitly saying 100% is possible. In real golf it is quite possible to "catch a flier" out of the rough, a ball that goes a good ways further than it is supposed to because you just happen to have it sitting up and pop it from the sweet spot. The thing is, you can usually tell when there is at least a chance of this happening based on the lie. You're pretty much dead on with what else you posted though. This game is kind of annoying because it's so close but so far too.Comment

Re: Updated IGN TW 2008 Preview (06/18/07)
Listen, I watched the whole IGN Tiger Woods Interview and I find most of everything that the producer is saying to be "ARCADE". Bottom line is there should be an option to make the game play more realistic so the game isn't as easy even on the highest level. You should not be able to hit monster drives on a regular basis without error or have one putt help cause that is not realistic of the actual game. Wind should play a huge roll and you should not be able to move the ball while it is in the air! If they really want to find the best golf of all-time, then they need to go back to PGA Tour for the Genesis as those guys were "REAL" players of the game. I don't need to hear explosions when I hit the ball and I don't need to hit hole in ones on a regular basis to keep my interest. As a matter of fact, that is a complete turn off when I can pick and play Tiger Woods golf with little to no experience and make par or better on almost every hole. That should not happen and if they want to appeal to the mass arcade gamers, then by all means give them those features but if anything, make the game as difficult as it is in real life and let the gamer choose to make it easier if they want. Don't give us another game right out of the gate that keeps your attention for the first 18 holes and then gets easier and easier as your career goes on without having to even think. There is little to no penalty for going the shortest distance to the hole so why even have to worry about laying the ball up or working around the course? I have never had to do it for the last few years in any of the Tiger Woods games so what makes this year any different????
Okay, that is my frustration post as once again, I guess we will be without another realistic golf game after watching that interview.Comment

Re: Updated IGN TW 2008 Preview (06/18/07)
agreed! Good post! But check the tiger forums on other sites..all u see are questions on how to eagle every shot and why cant i hit 350 yds and shoot a 54! Unfortunatly we are the minority and until Tiger gets some competition we are screwed. Hopefully 2k sports does some nice business with football and removes the cobwebs from "Links" game !Comment

Re: Updated IGN TW 2008 Preview (06/18/07)
Here's what I do to make Tiger on the 360 challenging: I use a limited number of clubs, and space my clubs so I have 20-25 yd gaps. I use for example a 3, 5, 7 and 9 iron. The other thing is I turn off all putting aids, including the grid. To read putts, I use the elevation marker and run it over the green ala Links 2001. Believe me, these two tweaks make the game a decent challenge. I've played Tiger for 14-16 months now; my average score after countless rounds is 79.9. And I consider myself a decent video golfer.
The game could be better, like any other. But I find it's a great deal of fun, as well as being extremely pleasant to both look at and listen to - also important for me with any game. That's why I don't mind tweaking the way I have to play it, in order to make it a challenge for me.Last edited by baa7; 07-09-2007, 05:25 AM.Comment
