Re: Clone clubs vs. Real clubs
Not a huge difference if you are a mid or high handi-capper.
You have to remember that even a cheap set of clone clubs is better equipment than Jack Nicklaus ever had to use when he was in his prime.
I play the real thing now, but I had a set of Cobra clone woods back in the 90's and I'm not sure I didn't hit those better than I hit my Ping & Clevelands now.Chalepa Ta Kala..... -
Re: Clone clubs vs. Real clubs
I had clones of Taylor made irons and the clones of the Cobra's, and they served there purpose back in the day. That being said, this year I bought the Burner 2.0 irons and the Taylor Made R11, and there is a HUGE difference.
The ball explodes off of my irons with awesome trajectory and they are very forgiving. The R11 is a sexy driver that I can bomb. Unfortunately I've been blocking the ball this season. I've been told it takes 2 seasons to learn your new clubs.
So, it really depends on what you an afford.I am the lesson after the fall.Comment

@OP - I think decent no-name irons can be found. The technology in a name brand driver is worth it though (buy a year out of date to save some money).Comment

Re: Clone clubs vs. Real clubs
Nicklaus played blades. There are guys on the Tour still playing them (Tiger for one). They're much more workable but incredibly unforgiving. I wouldn't say any knockoff is "better," just a very different animal.

But the knock-off irons to a high handi-capper won't feel much different. Don't buy a knock-off driver though, you will see the difference, a big difference. The quality of the clubface and the shaft just won't be there.Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment

Re: Clone clubs vs. Real clubs
They aren't knock offs if you go to custom made golf club route.
For example, one of the highest quality sites that I frequent is gigagolf.
Everyone seems to think they have to use name brand golf clubs, please save your money on lessons and rounds for crying out loud. You wonder why those name brands are so much more expensive?
Marketing, which equals branding, which equals higher production and distribution costs.
Just do a search for custom made clubs, you'll be surprised when you get a set at how high of quality.

Re: Clone clubs vs. Real clubs
Just seen this thread.
I used cloded TM's for 2 years. When i finally was getting real god amounts of tome on the course I bought some Callaway X20's
The total feel (like feedback/vibrations etc..) was awesome. There is a major difference , at least in my experience, and I'd suggest real over clones when you can. I couldnt believe how much better the striking and distance I was getting. If you only go out here and there and dont really have time to keep going and get better etc.. Then get the clones if you want.Joshua:

Re: Clone clubs vs. Real clubs
If you are serious and want to learn than blades and persimmons will put u on the right track and you will know your flaws.other than that today's clubs will hide some but you will have a hard time down the line.Comment

Re: Clone clubs vs. Real clubs
I don't know if blades are good or bad for learning your flaws but learning with a set of persimmons is dumb. Modern metal woods are literally played and swung in a different way the the wooden headed clubs of the olden days. Do not take trigger's advice, it is awful.Comment

Re: Clone clubs vs. Real clubs
Most amateur players would give up the game if they tried to play with the old time tour blades. You might find an old set at a local driving range. Give them a try.
Persimmon woods? forget it. I actually collected a few old second tier MacGregor woods many years back. Good luck hitting them. They are really nice to look at though.Comment

Re: Clone clubs vs. Real clubs
ABS all the way my friend! The responses you got really shows what golfing companies have done to the game. Toasters on sticks and irons that supposedly hit straighter and give zero feedback. There is a reason handicaps have not dropped in 30 years, it's called "technology"Hating Collingwood and umpires since 1979Comment
