To be fair he was chasing the career grand slam which only 5 people have achieved (now 6). The golf media would openly be rooting for Speith if he was near the lead in later rounds of the PGA. Obviously the way he is playing right now is highly far fetched.

See, I was actively rooting for him to NOT achieve the career grand slam, so that rationale was even worse for me. And somehow I doubt the golf media talking heads would be as openly partisan in favor of someone like, say, Patrick Reed if he were 1 major away from winning the Grand Slam.

He was the better outcome than Bryson. I did not want to see him win. I was happy for Rory, but I would’ve been happy with PGA guy than a LiV guy.

For you Rory was the better outcome.

For me, I would much prefer Bryson had won, because I find him much more entertaining and likeable.

I don't care about LIV vs PGA. That's a business dispute, plain and simple.

I hated him before he left for LIV lol.

He’s growing on me a bit though.

This is exactly the point I was making - if you're in the alleged 'golf media', it's not your job to decide who is and is not likeable or who is or is not worthy of rooting for. How do you even know if Patrick Reed is likeable or not? Do you know him? Have you met him?

You are of course free to have any opinion you want, because you're a regular fan and not in the media. What no one is free to do, however, is tell anyone else how they should feel about anyone else. This is especially true if you are in the media.

Imagine hating a guy like Rory, especially in pursuit of one of the greatest achievements in sports and actively cheering for "Can I break 50 with a pool noodle?" guy.

                      Yikes. Different strokes, I guess.

There's a case to be made why people view him as unlikable:
                        • He's a LIV golfer (don't under why people just dislike LIV golfers, but it's a true fact)
                        • Multiple alcohol arrests going back to college
                        • Accused of cheating multiple times, with evidence in most cases
                        • Accused of shaving strokes, moving balls, etc. (again w/ evidence)
                        • Sponsors were suing him for not paying back money
                        • He snaps at fans on a quasi-routine basis
                        • Always caught up in rules' "controversies"
                        • And here's a fun quote: PGA Tour golfer and University of Georgia alumnus Kevin Kisner believes that none of his former teammates had any time for Reed. “I don’t know that they’d piss on him if he was on fire.”

I have no judgement one way or the other, just making a point that it is hard to be considered likable with a rap-sheet like Reed's.

I'm not saying he's well-liked within the PGA Tour circles, but that could mean a lot of things. Everyone on the PGA seemed to dislike Bryson until he left the PGA Tour and was able to put out his own content, not filtered through the Golf Channel or golf media, and then it turned out he's a pretty likeable guy. I've certainly known people that weren't well-liked by a large number of people that I personally found to be just fine.

Anyway, all of this discussion only serves to illustrate my original point: the golf media openly rooted for Rory because they've picked who they want to encourage you to like (and by extension, dislike). Which is patently unprofessional, but by modern standards is pretty much de rigueur.

That’s a curious conclusion to come to?

What if people became attached to him for whatever reason and the golf media caught on to him and placated to that to capitalize on ratings?

Just because you find the guy unlikeable (which is also odd considering you questioning others for disliking Patrick Reed) doesn’t mean others didn’t like him.

                              Which conclusion?

I'm not sure what this sentence means. Who is "him"? Is "placated" the word you're looking for?

Anyway, to my point, here's Paul McGinley stating that anyone rooting for "the good of the game" should be rooting for Rory. He stated this multiple times, including on the Golf Channel's "Live From The Masters" show - the most mainstream of mainstream golf media. This is the kind of stuff that is a turn-off for me. Who decides what's "good for the game"?

I never said I found McIlroy unlikeable. And I never said others couldn't find whoever they wanted unlikeable. I actually specifically stated the opposite if you read my comments again. I said the media shouldn't be in the business of telling people who is likeable and who they should root for.

"The media" has *always* been in the business of telling people who to cheer for and what is "good for the game", regardless of sport.

It's just odd timing to play the "Actually Rory is the bad guy" card.

Is someone becoming the 6th golfer EVER in modern history to win the Career Grand Slam not "good for the game"? Is Rory finally winning another major after 11 years not "good for the game"? You didn't have an issue with Jon Rahm being shoved down our throats for a couple years, followed by Scottie Scheffler?
