Re: PGA Tour 2K21 Impressions Thread

Anyone else playing on Pro-Am with everything turned on and unlimited putt previews?

Sadly, I have to admit that this is myself... I dont know if I'm ready to turn things off.

    Loving the game so far!

Maybe it's just my experience BUT has anyone else been having the Pro cutscenes where every chip they sink it, no matter where around the green.

I had a cutscene yesterday where Finau couldnt see the pin from a bunker, but he nailed the shot.

I just made it to the PGA Tour last night, so I haven't seen it personally, but in watching some YouTube videos of folks playing career mode rounds, it seems like 80-90% of the pro cutscenes are bunker hole outs. I think I may just turn them off...

I turned the cut scenes off after the 1st 9 holes on the PGA Tour. It showed Finau, Garcia, DeChambeau about 7x and six of those shots were chip ins from around the green. One was Garcia from 200 yards out of the trees. Hard to tell from the camera angle but it looked like it was a low screamer that skipped off the front of the green and hit the pin...and dropped.

Also love the delayed reaction they give. Finau watched his chip in with this blank stare and then after about 15 seconds of listening to the commentary he finally reacted to the shot.

I'd rather not slow my round down. I also turned off the auto replays as well.

A lot of people were down on the game during the pre release phase including me. It was a pretty bad PR campaign and I focused too much on what wouldn't be in the game.

But it just shows how challenging and rewarding core gameplay mechanics can overcome a lot.

Some (most) of them are pretty cheesy and unnecessary but I was coming down the stretch at one of the PGA tour events and seeing what some of the guys were doing ahead of me was really cool and helpful to know what I had to. Patrick Cantlay made Eagle up ahead and I had about 4 more holes to make up some ground. Definitely added a layer of immersion.

This is 100% where I am at after one night of playing. Their marketing was horrendous. It gave us no info about the game in most cases, failed to answer any questions folks had until a week or two before release - and didn't even mention that Solo Societies were removed until the game was in people's hands.

That said, I think this game may get close to Tiger Woods 14 at the top of my pantheon of golf games. The gameplay is so enjoyably challenging. I am not really seeing any of the issues others are with putting or stuttering in the backswing. Even on Pro difficulty, earning a sub-par score is hard to do, and hitting good shots is oh-so rewarding.

The biggest problem at the moment for me is the horrible server stability. This game requires a constant online connection for all modes essentially - even offline career mode needs to be online. With most of the courses living on the servers, a stable connection is required. Unfortunately, HB/2K are not providing that. It shouldn't take 5-10 minutes to get past the initial boot-up screen as the game tries to connect to the servers. When playing at peak times in the evening, you might as well watch a show on Netflix or something while you wait for the game to load up.

I know that's likely an issue due to the number of folks playing the game right after release, but it just feels like the devs and publisher weren't prepared for the volume.

All in all, PGA 2K21 plays a great game of golf. While I don't know why anyone would have been convinced to play this game from any of the marketing 2K did, we thankfully got the massive amounts of streaming content two weeks before release that showed the game off a bit. That sold me on it, and I am glad it did.

To think that 2K and HB Studios were sitting on a game with this much richness to it with one of the most clandestine marking plans I've ever seen is totally baffling. If they had been more forthcoming with what this game was all about a couple of months earlier, I think their sales would have at least doubled. I couldn't imagine myself as a producer, sitting on a product like this, and being secretive about it... it totally makes no sense!?

Only thing that’s frustrating to me is the replay system. It seems like its bugged for whatever reason. I have yet to see a replay of any shot I stick within five feet from 150+ yards out, but I get one for a long bogey putt almost every time. I have yet to dive into career mode so maybe it’s just play now.

Does anyone know of any way to get rid of all the stuff on the bottom right hand side of the screen? I can't see any option in the settings to play with a clean screen.

The marketing was never about you and others looking for a golf sim... it was to hook the casuals to show the game was easy. If they would have shown golfers hitting shots all over the courses, missing 2 foot putts so many times and shooting rounds in the 90s, they would have scared just about all of them from buying the game.

One other tip for struggling mouse users: If you have swing plane feedback that often looks like this (to either side),

even if you're sure you're bringing the downswing straight through, you might be starting your swing with the mouse pointer positioned too low on the screen. The game seems to read mouse inputs based on how much they move the in-game cursor, so if it's hitting the bottom of your screen mid-backswing, it's not going to track your whole mouse/wrist movement. It could still end up being a straight shot if that happens, but you really can't have any imperfections in the swing direction if you do that, otherwise you'll get feedback like the above.

To prove this is how it works, just go to the practice range, place your pointer at the lowest point on your screen it can possibly go, and try to start the backswing. It shouldn't be possible - at least it wasn't for me. On my screen, I need the pointer to start at least a little bit higher than the distance control meter to even allow the backswing to start. Ideally of course, I start it much nearer the top of the screen to allow the full range of movement.

Their servers are seemingly overloaded almost all the time. It's even worse in the evenings when people are done with work, school, etc. The game itself doesn't even boot up in a reasonable amount of time.

The problem is...the online component is the ENTIRE game...you can't really do much without a connection to the servers.

Hopefully, they'll get them upgraded soon.

Great feedback, guys. I'm sorta leaning towards getting this now, although the above still gives me pause. I really hate 'always online' requirements and if it affects every aspect of the game, it borders on a deal-breaker for me. I hate having my game be at the mercy of servers or other people.

That having been said, I used to spend idiotic amounts of time on the old "Jack Nicklaus Unlimited" course designer, which was Jurassic compared to what the games are like today (and what PGA2K21 appears to be). I love designing courses, and it sounds like the course designer is quite robust, not to mention what some people have been able to accomplish based on what I've seen online (it's honestly amazing how well people can recreate courses).

I'm liking how well some of the tougher critics are enjoying the game so far, though. Definitely swaying my opinion.
