Good to hear that matchmaking is still viable, not sure if you were referring to PC or console. Player count on Steam seems to be 800-1,100 players...which seems really low, but I guess it's enough to sustain 4-player matches (are they all 2v2?).

And that's a good point with the Societies, I should browse for one before purchasing to try and find something in my skill range.

I play this game on both my PC and XBox Series X. Currently, I'm playing it on the PC everabout 90% of the time because I can play it at 60 FPS. I find that it's not difficult to get a 1V1 9-hole match on the PC. It's usually 2 to 5 minutes and I'll have a match. 2V2 Alt-shot is a different story... more like 15 to 20 minutes even during peak hours, which for me are like 12 noon EST to 7 PM. I get a lot of British folks in matches in those hours.

The beauty about the 2V2 alt-shot matches on the PC version is that once you get one and everyone tees off, PC players are far more likely to stick it out and play the match until completion. The game does a good job of making the play flow smoothly as well in all forms of matchmaking, including 2V2.

I play on PC, and I have TGC 2019, I'm just not sure if the new iteration brings enough to the table to warrant the purchase.

I've actually been debating since 2K21 released last year, and with spring fast approaching, I'm getting that golf itch. So here I am debating... again.

It is currently $29.99 on Steam. I'd prefer playing online against human competition over the AI. I just worry that career mode won't hold my attention for that long and that multiplayer is either dead or mostly elite players in Societies.

It's easily worth $30 on the PC. It plays more efficiently than TGC 2019, IMO, on the PC, and it definitely looks better. I think their new swing interface is better than that of TGC 2019, although I still think it has quite a ways to go to be where it should. I know I can't play TGC 2019 any more, having playing 2K21.

If you think that's low, you should see the lobby in Perfect Golf each night!

There appear to be about 60 of us left playing it at all.

I still love it and it works superbly for what I'm looking for, so I shall ride 'er until she dies.

Thanks all, decided to pull the trigger at $30 bucks.

Played just about up to my 2 hour limit, and alternated a few rounds between 2k and 2019, and you guys were right, 2k is the clear winner.

Having not played 2019 since last year, it deserved a few rounds to make sure. I can say I made the right choice, so thanks again.

Side note, I've decided to play with mouse and keyboard to kind of freshen things up, after 2+ decades of playing golf games with a controller. While it is refreshing, I do wonder how long I'll hang with it before I need the convenience being able to lean back, relax and just use a controller lol.

I play it at that frame rate on my PC and the tempo dependent swing gets so much more feedback at 60 FPS versus the 30 it's now getting on the Series X. It makes the game so much more playable, IMO.

The Auto HDR that the Series X provides works wonderfully with 2K21. I can't think of a game I own that benefits more from it. I think when you couple Auto HDR with FSP Boost, you're going to have an almost next-gen version of 2K21.

HB Studios is going to be providing new DLC next month and it's rumored that HB Studios might be including an option to turn off the frame rate cap for the Series X as part of that update. I don't care whether it's Microsoft of HB Studios who takes the frame rate shackles off of this game, I just want them off. I think by April that will be the case.
Yea I’m definitely not asking for a huge change in graphics. But after playing miles morales, the difference is jarring.

That is always the hangup with even the "best" of the current golf games.

Once one goes and plays basically any other game that's relatively up to date and using the latest technologies and polish.....it becomes hard to enjoy the golf game graphics as much.

I fired up Tiger Woods 14 on Xbox 360 in the last few weeks, and it's amazing how the graphics, animations, and presentation almost stand up to even Rory Mcilroy and especially PGA 2K21. I was playing Legends of the Majors in TW 14, and the historical graphics/presentation of playing in the 1960s as Arnold Palmer at Augusta, and seeing Palmer's actual swing in game, makes PGA 2K21 look quite poor from a visual standpoint in my mind, considering TW 14 is about 8 years old now.

This is so true. It's really incredible how good TW14 is, particularly looking at it in retrospect.

If it ever gets emulation support along the lines of other EA games (like NHL), it will be incredible all over again, at higher rez. I really am looking forward to that.

                    For sure!

Here's an example of what I was talking about in my last post: Arnold Palmer at Amen Corner at Augusta, set in 1958. Look at the colors, the backgrounds, the animations:

Then look at an Augusta replica in PGA 2K21, also in Amen Corner.

I know this game doesn't have the 1950's filter like the TW14 clip does, but the colors and environment just look bland. The textures of grass and areas around water hazards look unfinished to me. The animation is so...uninspired. I do like the lighting in 2K21, but the look of everything else is - pardon the pun - not up to par, even when held against a game that's almost 10 years old and on a console that's 2 generations old now.

With the PS5 and Xbox Series X out, the next PGA game will really need to take a look the visuals of their game and make huge improvements there. They could get by with the below average graphics before, as they were viewed as a small dev in a niche part of the gaming landscape and all that. But with 2K's brand all over the series now, full PGA Tour integration, and 2 million copies of this version sold, PGA 2K needs to be treated as a AAA franchise from here on out.

                      This is spot on.

Let's be honest, other than the "shimmering", Rory just mops the floor with 2k21 graphics...and it's now 6 years old and built for what is now previous gen.

Man I would have loved to see what Augusta might have looked like in Rory's Frostbite!

I really hope HB/2K can figure out some way with a new or upgraded engine to not have everything look "the same". I can just never really get a sense or feel of course differentiation in TGC/2K. The courses just look and feel mostly so much all the same, but with different names.

Without people having access to a course creator I would never buy an HB game. With a new engine who knows what problems that presents?

And his putting stroke, his reaction after missing a putt. And different swing from young Nicklaus to old Nicklaus. And Jack lifting the putter and celebration like after making that famous putt in his last Masters win. Trevino's swing is pretty good too. And to top it, they can all be played by the gamer. I can just imagine the cost of all the licensing, and the official 4 majors, the trophies... and it barely sold a few hundred thousand copies.

Sales figures are the reason we only have HB now.

If we are to believe what we hear, 2k21 is flying off the shelves to a degree unseen for a golf game in ages.

I honestly hope that's true, but not for 2k/Hb --- mainly to get the attention of other developers in the hope that others may take a crack at it again.

HB can't even get scoreboards to work right.

I'm not at all enthusiastic about them carrying the torch for golf games into the future.
