PGA 2k21 (and future) audio observations and requests

I know this is on the fringe for most golf gamers, but I just have to say this after a year of playing 2k21 almost every day. I don't expect that anyone is interested in this, but I'm just hoping it gets addressed in the EA game, and any new offering from 2K.

I'm a long time professional musician, and I've run a recording studio for the last 20 years. I'm an audio guy, big time. Maybe my ears are too audio-orientated, but one thing that has really annoyed me about 2k21, is how incredibly poorly recorded the commentator audio is.

You probably don't notice it when listening through your monitor or TV, but when you put buds or phones on, ALL of the Luke and Rich audio sounds like it was recorded while they were wearing headsets with cheap condenser mics that wrap around to your mouth. You can hear all of their breath, plosives (Ps, Ts, Fs, all of them) on every recorded phrase. It's vocal recording 101 type ****. The worst example are the few times when you hear Rich Beem get really loud and animated when a long putt appears to be going in (which almost never does whenever it triggers his response), when he yells, "Looking reeeeally gooood noooww!". It is so obviously over compressed and sounds unlike any other audio clip in the entire game. Again, audio recording 101 type stuff.

My point is, at this point in the development of any game, sports or otherwise, it's simply ridiculous that sub par level of basic voice over audio recording exists, in any format. It's that bad. I'm not talking about their performance, or how they "sound" as announcers or what they are saying. In fact I love Luke Elvey and John's commentary, and still leave it on most of the time. But the basic audio engineering blunders on the PGA Tour Career Mode with Luke and Beem are just awful. One of the many things I'm rooting for HB to fix for the next one.

I hear you. I can't say I could pinpoint the issue as nicely as you have in your post, but I have long noticed that the commentary seemed a bit "off" in a way I couldn't describe. Also, I'm glad you pointed out how whenever Beemer says "looking reeeaaallly good!!!!" I know 100% that I missed the putt. So stupid and has long driven me nuts.

Honestly, I like PGA2K21 and there's a lot to recommend it, but it's not really a "AAA" game in the same way that other major sports have a "AAA" game (at least in terms of production value). As everyone who bothers to peruse a golf sub-forum on OS knows, this game is basically a Ford Pinto at its core, they just bolted on a spoiler, installed an aftermarket exhaust, and put 10 coats of competition orange on the frame so it has some sporting aspirations, but at heart it's still a Pinto....

I love the Pinto analogy haha. Perfect.

Like I said you can't really hear the badly recorded/over compressed audio from the TV, but with phones on, the commentary in Career Mode is pretty awful. For some reason, John's commentary isn't affected by it. I still really like his commentary and voice, and leave it on all the time. I still hear new things after playing it every day for a year solid. Yesterday I heard one for this first time, at the end of a High Roller skins match, he was signing off, and said, "and by the way, thanks for not turning the volume down on the commentary". I laughed at that one. Never heard it before.

I do love this game, but you are right, it's not a AAA game. Next gen graphics, fix the leaderboards, and a few other tweaks and I would be very happy. I love the swing mechanics, the ball physics, and hope they don't change any of that. Just give us more official courses, better graphics and fix the leaderboards and I'm very happy indeed. I don't care if EA or 2k gets it right...just hoping one or both of them do.
