By next year, the “next gen” is already a couple years old.

Way past time to ditch PS4/XB1 era at that point
Agreed with this. I give it a few months from that last gen will mostly be legacy ports especially with sports games. Games like Madden and the show truly need to take advantage of the hardware. Other than the faster load times and frame rate, there hasn’t been that jump in graphics, in regards to just sports games.

I don't know...Sony is being pretty clear that while production will increase, PS5 availability won't meet consumer demand until March 2023 at the earliest - https://arstechnica.netblogpro.com/g...ly-until-2023/

I do think it's fine that EA's game is going straight to next-gen...they don't have a last-gen option to continue currently, so why start one now?

But it's still risky that they're trying to hop back into the golf gaming world with a game on consoles that people can't get with frequency, all while their last attempt at a game in this genre was Rory McIlroy back in 2015.

Meanwhile, 2K21 released, sold over 2M copies, and the next game in that series will likely still find it's way onto PC and last-gen consoles, PLUS will have next-gen options.

And yes, Augusta is a huge draw for any and all virtual golfers, as is Pebble, St Andrews, and the rest. But unless they pull out all the stops and somehow add a course designer, EA will have a finite number of courses to play - I think it sounds like 12 courses have been announced up to this point.

2K's game, on the other hand, will never run out of new, free-to-play tracks to try out thanks to the designer. While most are not good, many that do get designed are either pretty solid real course replicas or are great user-made fictional courses that are of quite high quality.

Again, both games are very compelling, and when I get a next-gen console, I will likely have both titles. But I do see that EA is going to have to fight an uphill battle if they expect to get back to the Tiger Woods series' heyday.

Every sports title EA has touched has gone stale since the PS3 era. There is no way EA would ever include a course designer of any value in their golf game. The supposed new swing mechanic can only be a mix of what they used in the past something along the lines of a hash up of 13 and 14.

I know many will disagree here, but if they made a version of the swing offerings from TW12-14 and had some course packs to get me (eventually) somewhere north of 35 courses -- I'd be happy as hell and way more than satisfied.

I really just want a modern/next-gen TW14 that fixes some obvious stuff and brings us beautiful graphics and some form of the TW12-14 gameplay.

It will be good to have two games, as they appear to be targeting slightly different groups

This would be fine...35 courses would work for me, and going the TW 14 route in terms of the amount of content, modes, and gameplay would be nice.

I still wonder how EA will approach DLC with this new golf game. Rory didn't have any paid DLC - which is exactly how it should have been, since that game was incomplete at launch. And since this is another new entry into EA golf, I wonder if they'll still keep DLC free, or go the more "traditional" route and charge for it.

It’s confirmed to be on frostbite, same as Rory.

My guess is they will use a ton of assets from Rory 15 over again. Obviously touch them up.

Obviously just my 2 cents , but 2Ks infinite amount of courses just don’t do it for me, Mist feel stale , sure there’s some gems but I find myself enjoying the courses on Rory 15 much more. Maybe if 2K was prettier I would? I don’t know.

Re: It now seems logical we will get PGA Tour 2k23 this year

I think you guys overrate the appeal of a course creator. It’s a neat feature that looks way better on the back of the box than in practice. And if keeping the course creator means remaining on Unity, then the game will always gave a thin coating of junk that will limit its popularity with a larger audience.

I will take 10-15 licensed courses done in Frostbite over trying to decide which flipping course to download. I own ever version of TGC and the 2K version. None of them held my interest. I still get RMPGAT out and play.

My interest in 2K’s game diminished when it became clear the publisher viewed Unity as good enough That told me 2K felt like could pocket some easy cash while EA rebooted, and never really considered competing with EA.

I mean, they invested in Tiger Woods’ name stead of a new game engine. That is borderline grifting.

Re: It now seems logical we will get PGA Tour 2k23 this year

These are all fair points...but imagine if 2K21 came out with just the 15 real courses that it shipped with, and the two that came out after release. That game would be deader than a doornail.

The fact they have a designer means the content keeps coming out. Yes, playing the really cool, real, and perhaps better-looking courses are a huge draw to EA's game...it is for me, too. But there's also an appeal to knowing that there's likely to be at least a few courses that get released in 2K's game each week that are pretty good...and won't cost me a dime.

Sure, now that we are two years after release, every part of 2K21 will start to feel stale - and in all honesty, it felt stale in many ways a while ago. But it's still pretty amazing that there will still be a course or two that comes thru each week or so that pushes the limits of what can be done in the designer. Heck, someone just released an updated version of Southern Hills this week in advance of the PGA Championship. Meanwhile, another designer came up with a course set in Yosemite National Park...

I think the biggest takeaway is that the pandemic, console shortages, and actual competition have made releasing the next golf games tremendously more tricky. The strategy of release, as well as more weird world events, may have more impact on the success of the games than anything to do with actual gameplay.

I don’t envy the devs for either game. It’s gonna be stupid ugly.

My guess is that this will be closer to the end of their Fiscal 2023 if that's how it's being positioned.

Could be a pretty "head to head" release here..
If I'm 2k, I'm trying hard to get that out several months before EA for sure

I’m think august or September, no way they release in the spring without Augusta.

The more I think about this, the more I am tempering my expectations.

I think the engine and look and feel will be essentially the same, but with a full content overhaul to reflect the work with and influence from Tiger and some type of PGA focus again.

I agree with others that they won't drop the course creator and all that user effort to date and the continual sales/marketing push/pull of "unlimited courses!" -- "make your own!"

There are ways they could continue to make it look better with the same engine, but unfortunately the course creator aspect and how they designed that could still limit the look variability.

I think you're darn close on what to expect...same engine, just everything a bit better, especially with content and PGA mode. I'm cool with that. Just make the 2k21 game better in every way, even if it's the same engine.

It really seems crazy that they would wait until the beginning of 2023 to release this. Everything to me is pointing toward a late summer/fall release, or right before the holiday season. Why in the world would they not try to take advantage of a few months before the EA game comes out.
