Re: EA Sports PGA Tour Course Playthrough Video Featuring Pebble Beach & Sawgrass
Another reaction video to yesterday's gameplay feature...I believe this gentleman is an indie sports game dev:
Hits on many things we've discussed here. He also touches on something I've noticed - that the overlays/meters/scorecards post-hole are very large and intrusive and they clutter up the screen.
For me personally, the entire line of icons and button prompts on the lower left of the screen when your player is standing off to the side before address looks odd and takes up a lot of room - or at least a lot more room that it really needs to:
What is all that for? Why do we need 9 icons sitting down there? I guess it's not super intrusive, but that's just a lot of extra "stuff" on-screen.
I get having the shot type icon, a scorebug, and a swing meter on screen, but everything else is just junk and makes everything look cluttered.LG 77CX OLED / Sonos Arc Soundbar / Xbox Series X / Apple TV 4KComment

Seems those are camera or replay controls? I would guess those things could be toggled on/off within the visuals/display settings.
Still, all this on-screen "stuff" makes for a very cluttered screen when left on. I feel like making it so one button press could bring up these camera/replay controls or something would be better than just having them all out in the open all the time.Orbis Non SuficitComment

Re: EA Sports PGA Tour Course Playthrough Video Featuring Pebble Beach & Sawgrass
Just reading along through the thread it is tough to gauge the room.
I am not sure if I am in the minority or majority, but after yesterday I am looking forward to this game next week.
I am on a golf course 2-3 times a week. I have good days and I have bad days, but when I play this, for it to keep me playing, I need some sort of fun factor. I am not looking for the FromSoftware version of a golf game. I don't want to win every tournament in career mode by 10 strokes, but I also don't have the time in my life to play for hours/days just to be casually competitive.
It reminds me of when NBA Live fell apart. I love 2k, I play it as often as I can, but sometimes picking up Live and letting it fly just hit the spot. It wasn't for everyone, but it was something that you could set back and enjoy with a small learning curve. I think that is the angle they are going for here. Maybe I am wrong though.
This will not be popular on here to some of the more hardcore people, but there are some people that I think this is what we are looking for. I tried to make it on the TGC Tour when it started, but now I don't have the time in my life to do that.DSM Transfer.

EA's game is going to specifically try to hit those who want a quick, easy to pick up round of golf. It offers more iconic courses than 2K...ones that everyone can recognize or ones that are on most every golfer's bucket list.
There's going to be a career mode that will keep people coming back, as well as enough online modes to make those interesting, too. Challenges will be fun, quick hitting events that will also appeal to a wide range of players.
While there are lots to pick on with this gameplay video and all the other stuff EA has done in the lead up to the game, at the end of the day, we will find out if the game is any fun next week when reviews and feedback starts to roll in. And as you mentioned, fun factor is going to be key with this game.Orbis Non SuficitComment

I recognise the name he’s an old TW gamer from way back. Oblong will probably remember him, I’m sure he was a decent player.Comment

I think part of the problem is people have forgotten who the target audience ea is for. It’s a pick up and play and have a beer with your buddies. Always has been. It wasn’t until TW 10-14 they slowly introduced sim modes. For me personally I don’t care if there is no rain or if the trees are static. I just want a fun golf game that’ll will keep me entertained and not feel like chore.
When the dev said even a 4 year old can play this game, it said a lot about how this game was built. It's dial a distance and difficulty options are just going to make the game harder, not more sim.Comment

Live had a terrible Association mode, it was bare bones compared to 2k's. Yet I still tried to play it because on the court the game was a lot of fun.DSM Transfer.

Hardcore sim heads like those that are on the forums of OS, represent a very small percentage of the customer base. And while the sim heads can appreciate failure if they don't do the right things, the biggest part of the customer base cannot, and will not. And if that portion of the customer base gets frustrated because a game is too difficult and disappears, then almost certainly so does the game and the team that works on it.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Re: EA Sports PGA Tour Course Playthrough Video Featuring Pebble Beach & Sawgrass
For myself the career mode was always just the grind to get your golfer build up so you could compete with others online whether h2h, the hilarious altshot, or test your nettles on the daily tourneys.
My sincere hope is for interesting decisions to make for your golf bag and your golfers stats/archetype. Add in stable online play and being void of some of the near gamebreaking bugs of the past as a must. Finally offer us a challenge where we can feel progression in our golfing abilities and interesting decision-making on the courses. When done right the actual number scores are not nearly as important as some people choose to make them out to be.
Many of us know that past EA games delivered those things while others didn't. Really hoping this one is a return to some great fun.Comment

Re: EA Sports PGA Tour Course Playthrough Video Featuring Pebble Beach & Sawgrass
To piggy back on this thought, its not just EA that realizes who the biggest customer base will be for their games. Its people who want to experience the said sport, have it mimmick what they see on tv, but also be accessible enough for them to find instant gratification and success. A vast majority of the players aren't looking for a grind thru a few seasons in order to build up their character or team to be successful experience.

One other thought I just had remembering the video is how they played the first hole at Pebble. Going over the trees is NOT how pros play that hole. Will be interesting to see if when you are "paired up" with a pro in a tournament if they take iron out and hit it straight to stay short of the traps like most of them do in real life.Comment

I think each of us is looking forward to July 2024... but man I am worried that if this many people on here are this upset now, it might be a meltdown then!

From the career mode "deep dive" article on EA's website:
"During Career Mode gameplay, you can use the “AI Pairings” setting to play shot-for-shot against an AI PGA TOUR pro, or turn it off to speed up the round and concentrate solely on your game.
The AI performance is based on official ShotLink data, so pros play each course and particular hole just like they would in real life."Last edited by MrArlingtonBeach; 03-31-2023, 10:27 AM.Orbis Non SuficitComment
