Bridgestone owns Firestone so I'm sure the info was free. However I dont think much info from a CART/IRL tire can carry over to the F1 tire.

man that's too bad, I like F1 racing, used to watch it all the time as a child. This is a sad day for F1 and its fans. I really hope something will be done to make sure something like this never happens again.http://flotn.blogspot.com

Re: Holy problems USGP!
The problem with michellin was they were the whiny little kid who had the ball and decided to take it home so no one else could play. We are not talking about a small tire company, we are talking about THE largest manufacturer in the world! This is all they do, make tires. You are telling me that a company who has done this for over a century could not figure out that their tires couldnt sustain a 9 degree bank at 180 mph? Thats absurd. They have more technolgy at hand than all the other tire companies combined, and the truth behind it is they came to indy with that tire compund for a reason. They wanted to show up bridgestone and firestone in america. They wanted to prove that since michellin hasnt been in the 500 for as long as i can remember, that they can beat firestone here. So, they brought a tire they thought could do that. Turned out, they were wrong. Theres no question toyota was running an agressive set up, which in turn caused the failures. No other cars had problems but the toyotas. This is the second year in a row that they have had problems here. What is most dissapointing however is that the teams could have put on new tires, and just taken the penalty of going to back of the field. That only put them behind ferrari, because minardi and jordan would soon be at the back anyhow. IT is just a huge mess that will ruin the greatest form of racing, and now I will have to go to canada and europe to see them, because im sure tony isnt going to pay them 15 million to show up again."Basketball may have been born in Massachusetts, but it grew up in Indiana." - James NaismithComment

Re: Holy problems USGP!
I have been to every F1 race at Indy except this one. This year I had to sell my tickets on ebay because my wife wanted me to stay home for fathers day (apologies to the guy on ebay who bought them!) I'm glad I sat with my daughter watching hot air balloons rather than driving 9 hours each way for that mess!
First off, I think that little oompa loompa Bernie (by the way Bernie, Danica has more class in her 23 years than you have in your 812 or however old you are) and the senile old fart Max are killing F1, and have been for years. I wouldn't trust them to run an ice cream cart much less F1.
But I blame Michelin and the teams that use their tires for the mess. From the information I've read, it seems that they wanted to have their way without penalty, or they were taking their teams and going home. The FIA's suggestions to fix the situation were workable, but were rejected by the Michelin teams because they would lose too much ground to the Bridgestone teams (AKA Ferrari).
Other than all of the other talk in all the different racing forums I've seen, 2 things stand out for me.
One, where were the cries for safety when Kimi Raikkonens front tire vibrated so badly that it shattered his suspension at the Nurburgring? Seems McClaren had no problem using a badly deteriorated tire that day.
And two, did anyone notice during the last part of the race coverage on Speed TV, when the Jordan team told Karthikian (sp?) to hold his revs down in turn 13 in order to preserve his tires? So thats OK for Jordan, but not for Renault or McClaren?
If I were in charge all of the teams that pulled out of the race would be docked all of their championship points. And next year we'd be down to only one tire manufacturer, and I bet you can guess who it wouldn't be.
I'm not a big fan of Tony George, but man do I feel for him. He got royally screwed over by F1, and I don't blame him a bit if he tells them not to come back next year. He spends a ton of money and a lot of time getting F1 to come to Indy, and from what I hear he really doesn't make much money from it. Now if people demand refunds, it's his wallet that it will come out of.
Every year on the Monday after the race, my order for tickets is in the mail (or I do it online starting last year). This year the paperwork sits on my desk. I have not written out getting them totally yet, as I'm waiting to see how this plays out, but with the IRL going to Watkins Glen now (much closer to me), most likely that is where I'll get my open wheel fix. So long F1, and thanks for all the fish!Comment

Re: Holy problems USGP!
Well stated. We must not turn our anger to the IMS or tony, as he did all he could to ge things going. He understands the importance of having the f1 in america, and has spent a ton of money to do so. The whole situation is almost surreal, i still cant believe what i saw yesterday. If i wasnt such a huge fan, I would tell f1 to piss off, go back to europe. but, i have traveled all over the world watching f1, and now it just happens to land in my backyard the past 6 years, so it has truly been a dream come true. I couldnt imagine when i flew to monaco, and then to have something like this happen, what i would have done. But, this is what happned to 10s of thousands of fans sunday. F1 is not bigger than their fan base, but they are acting that way. Only in this day and political environment can we see what has transpired, and perhaps some good will emerge from this. I doubt it though."Basketball may have been born in Massachusetts, but it grew up in Indiana." - James NaismithComment

Re: Holy problems USGP!
Unfortunately I agree, I don't think it will recover. Tony and IMS really have been doing great promoting the race (despite what that little troll Bernie thinks). The fantastic support races, the pit walkaround, the new grandstands; they've done a lot to make the weekend enjoyable and to get people to return. Heck, all the years I went the group of people who went with me got bigger.
If F1 fails in the US it certainly isn't Tony's fault. It's the fault of a bunch of hot headed and group thinking team bosses who decided to fire the latest shot in their feud with Bernie and F1 (and stick it to the red cars while they were at it) by trying to blackmail the FIA. I have no doubt they figured the FIA would buckle, with a track full of fans. I'm glad the FIA stuck to it's guns in this case, and shame on the teams. Shame on all of F1 for that matter, for letting things get this out of control.
It's funny, I'm reminded of a comment that Bobby Rahal made when he left the Jaguar team a few years ago. It was something to the effect that one gets the impression that Formula 1 really doesn't care if there are Americans in the sport or not. Between Bernie's comments and the race fiasco, it certainly seems to be the case.Comment

The old racing surface was diamond-ground in 2003, so Michelin ran the last two years on a diamond-ground surface with no problems.

Re: Holy problems USGP!
Hi PK, I was wondering when you'd be back on the boards. I'm sure you can't go into many details with what IMS's plans are from here, but I was wondering what it was like for you guys when the cars pulled into the garages. Did you have any idea that would happen? What did you guys do once the race started? I can only imagine how you guys felt as this all transpired.Comment

Re: Holy problems USGP!
I doubt the Indy people could do a damn thing...sounds like this was all a political struggle between F1, the tire companies, and the racing teams, where the fans lost out because both sides wanted to hold their groundNintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: Holy problems USGP!
That was just laughable and sad to see this past weekend. Bernie Ecclestone and the others involved in F1 should be ashamed of what transpired. I've heard that Indy will be giving out refunds.
This may have been the death knell for F1 racing in America. If i'm Tony George I wouldn't let F1 back on my track for a good 5 years after the shenanigans they pulled.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Holy problems USGP!
Maybe there is hope f1 wont back down.
The FIA has ordered the seven Michelin teams to appear at a hearing of its World Motor Sport Council on Wednesday June 29 following their controversial withdrawal from the US Grand Prix.
Lets hope they impose some harsh penalty to not only the teams, but michelin as well. This cannot go unpunnished, and i think bernie understands this."Basketball may have been born in Massachusetts, but it grew up in Indiana." - James NaismithComment

Re: Holy problems USGP!
also, on michelins site:
"It is regrettable that our pre-race suggestions, agreed in conjunction with our partner teams, were not adopted. Had our ideas been followed, we could have guaranteed driver safety, the participation of our teams and added interest for the public. "
This is great. Can they whine more about not coming prepared. This is like the spurs telling the pistons they have to play in socks because all they brought were their slippers, and its just not fair for the pistons because they have the right equipment."Basketball may have been born in Massachusetts, but it grew up in Indiana." - James NaismithComment
