    Great World Racing cheat code

    Boys:

I'm not a big fan of cheat codes, especially if they soften the learning curve or challenge of a game.

But I'll admit that I used one last night on the new Xbox racing title, World Racing, with great fun.

This code simply puts you in the middle of a championship that's 80 percent finished, so you have access to more than 100 cars and a ton of tracks. It doesn't give you extra speed or invulnerability or anything like that -- just more cars and tracks.

Start a new championship code and use this as a name: ALLUCANGET .

Some of the high-powered cars are diabolical to drive with all assists off and the simulation meter set to 100 percent. In fact, the pre-World War II Grand Prix Mercedes, an open-wheel car, is an absolute blast to drive with those settings. Lurid wheelspin and tail slides. Plus the cockpit view is fantastic.

And you have some hellishly long tracks unlocked with this code, too. I drove on a Alps track that was 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) long last night!

I'm going to continue to progress through the championship with the profile I created under my name and use the cheat-coded profile for when I want a quick fix with a variety of cars.

Does that still make me a cheater?

    P.S.: I love World Racing. A driver's driving game.

    Take care,
    PK

pk, glad to see you still visit a forum

Hopefully the "over-moderated" forums can keep you around for a while, bro.

I've been waiting for your detailed impressions on WR, haven't grabbed it yet. Wanted to see if the Apex-like hype died down before dropping change on it.

        Terry:

I've never had a problem with the OS Forums. Never. These forums aren't the Wild West that everyone thinks they are. Someone owns them -- namely, Steve -- and he has the right to implement whatever rules he wants.

Some people have a hard time getting their arms around that. If they don't like it, they can leave. That's why the whining about it at SR was getting old.

Anyways, I've only put about 75 minutes into World Racing, but I can tell you that the driving and racing models are eons better than Apex.

I never hyped Apex from the start. I realized right away that the driving model was way too simplistic and the rubber-band AI cheated way too much for me to like the game.

World Racing is much different. The adjustable sim-arcade slider for handling and the adjustable AI are absolutely brilliant and add to the depth of this game immensely.

I'll go so far as saying that the AI and driving model sliders are among the most novel wrinkles I've seen in a racing game in a while. Hopefully they'll become regular features in all racing games.

Rent World Racing if you can find it. I also think that you won't be disappointed if you buy it, either.

Just remember that many of the early cars are grocery-getters and mini-vans, so they're going to feel sluggish and sloppy. But the racing is still good. And if you either progress through the championship or use the cheat code listed above, you'll find that the more powerful cars are a riot to drive, especially with all assists turned off, the sim slider maxed out and the AI tuned quite high.

I don't use a wheel, so I'm not sure of the wheel support. But I'm guessing that a wheel would be great fun with this game because you really need to drive the car and make a lot of steering corrections, especially with the assists off and a high-powered, rear-wheel-drive car underneath you.

        Take care,
        PK

Yeah, I wasn't trying to imply that you A)felt that way about the forums, or B) hyped Apex. I was just commenting on the general complaints that people have about over-moderation. With Apex, I think most of the hype came from other people. I still have fun with Apex once in a while, but now in the Dream Car pro series, it seems I can dominate a race and go from 1st to 6th in the last corner. No longer fun.

I think I'll go down and grab WR, what the hell. Can't hurt, I can offload one of these 30+ XBox games I already have...maybe Apex .

                Terry:

Sorry if it appeared I was accusing you of anything. I wasn't. You're one of the truly good guys on the Web. Plus I'm so tired of the political discussions and personal finger-pointing at SR that it's just refreshing as hell to come to a forum -- either OS or Digital Sportspage -- and talk about games!

Either way, check out my latest post about WR. Just had an incredible lunchtime race.

I highly recommend World Racing so far. Trade-in Apex for it -- I doubt you'll regret it, especially with all assists turned off, the sim setting at 100 percent and the dynamic AI turned off. Pump in that cheat code I listed above, grab one of the more-powerful rear-wheel-drive cars and let me know what you think.

I think you'll enjoy it. Plus the draw-in distance is absolutely remarkable. I'm no graphics' whore, but I stopped along the guardrail on an Australian coastline course when I was so far behind last night that it was impossible to catch up. I just sat there and looked at the objects far in the distance -- stunning amount of draw-in distance.

                Take care,

Amazing. Since you're so high on it, I indeed am trading in Apex Should have WR tonight when I get home.

                        Terry:

One word of warning: This is a game in which you must read the manual and be patient with the menus. It quite possibly has the most confusing interface of any game I've played in any genre.

That's why I recommend punching in that cheat code for starters and just screwing around with the cars and the interface. You'll have a riot -- especially with the powerful, rear-wheel-drive cars -- and you won't screw up any aspect of your personal championship profile if the menus confuse you.

Another tip: Use the cockpit view. It's insanely good in this game. You can use the right stick to look out the left or right window while driving, depending on which way you move the stick!

Let me know what you think of WR!
