Thanks Hellisan. Speaking of reviews, check this one out from the Gamespot forums (not mine). Pretty entertaining and captures my thoughts exactly. I know I'm hyping this game a lot, and I'm sure in time the sheen will come off in some regards, but I'm really enjoying it:
"Hey what's up guys. Look I know there are some out there saying this game looks good, but do I really need another racer? I'm a hardcore, simulation nut. Anything from Hardcore Flight sims, to hardcore racing games I'm there. I purchased Steel Battalion for goodness sake lol. I get a certain satisfaction out of knowing that I'm competing in a challenging game, in the most realistic way possible. Hardcore people we love realism, and don't like settling for less.
If you are a gamer that says these graphics are grainy, or not polished, or there is no story or an evolving character, than this game may not be for you. This game is for the guy who truely loves the connection between man and machine. The true car, and racing enthusiasts love the graphics of this game and find it more than suitable for what we need. That is we just want to recreate the racing experience. Who has time to look at the trees, and the grass, or the crowd? We are concentrating on hitting the next apex correctly, and hitting our break points so we can exit the next corner with maximum grip and control. So we can shave off precious seconds.
There is no cool soundtrack, and the menus suck! The true race fan gets enjoyment out of hearing the beautiful symphony under the hood, and exaust. The sastisfying note of the engine after a proper downshift. That's the only sound we're interested in. Simbin understands how important the sound of your car is to proper racing. The sound in this game is amazing to me. Gran Turismo, and Forza please take note.
Hey I'm 31 years old and married. when I was younger and living at home I was able to keep a gaming PC, and played older racing games on PC like Papyrus's Indycar Racing II, to get my racing fix. As the years went on I just got tired of building PC's to play my favorite games... lol Ok My wallet got tired. I just couldn't afford it. So I got accustomed to the Gran Turismo series, which is a great series, but Lord does it have it's glaring flaws. Horrible AI, No damage, and horrible sound. The driving physics in GT have improved over the years, but to me that means nothing if I can run right into the back of someone and vice versa and nothing happens. They call it the driving simulator, but that's not driving I've ever seen anywhere. Cockpit View added to GT shows atleast they are heading in the right direction.
This brings me to Forza..Great game in it's respects. Great online system. Auction house, and Painting is phenominal. The lows in Forza to me are it's weightless cars. and slippery traction. I get no sense of body roll, and weight transfer, car behavior from it. They are on a good path with the whole tire gripp/loss of grip mechanic they implemented into the game...but at the same time all assists off doesn't mean the car should feel like it's on Ice skates. The no cockpit view kills it for me in Forza...I'm the type of racer that takes cue's from steering inputs, body roll, and weight transfer to help me nail better laps.
Which Finally brings me to Race Pro. Since not having a PC, I've always kept an eye on Racing Sims, especially Simbins excellent titles. Always envious of those who had full race set up in their living rooms. I'm talkin guys who had Force feedback steering wheels, 3 pedals on the floor, and H pattern shifters. Knowing a hardcore racing games of that caliber may never hit consoles. So when I saw GTR never came out, but now they are giving us Race Pro...I was like Praise Jeeeesus.
I go into Gamestop, and pick up the game yesterday, and the kid behind the counter says to his buddy...wow dude we are selling out of these Race Pro's...We only ordered six and after this guy buys this one, we'll only have one left. I din't think this game was this popular. Inside I smiled and said yeah us hardcore have been waiting for a game like this. I told him I was thinkin about getting Street Fighter 4 and Race Pro, but that I know after I get my *** whipped online in SF4, I'd be playing Race Pro longer anyway lol. I'll wait till SF is 20 bucks and pick it up on the cheap. (This is big cause a F'n love Street fighter Man)
I get home pop it in, and go to the menus, and turn off all the assist off, no racing line, change my control set up to manual. In the back of my mind I'm like oh boy be ready to be all over the place. So I pick the Mini...throw the cockpit view on, and squeeze the trigger. AAhh a nice deep grumble from engine. Shifting in this game is sweet. Start increasing speed and it feels gooood....the sound, the handling, weight, the grip, it feels damn good. That's the whole point of all my rambling this damn game feels good man..I was lapping and besting my times, having a blast with the Mini. Played with some of the other cars and everything drives differently. Excellent. I love this game because it came to do what it needed to. No flash, no fluff, just gets the Job done. It's satisfying. Next I'm going to try it with the microsoft wheel. Not the best wheel in the world, but we'll see how it goes. Just wish I could use my Gran Turismo wheel on Xbox but whatever... Just wanted to share my point of view.. Happy Racing Guys."
