NASCAR 09: Random Thoughts for Next Iteration

I'd put NASCAR away for a few months, but with the season kicking back in I dusted it off and put in back into the 360 and cranked off a few races.

A few thoughts about the game for the next edition:

    1. Performance Points - I'm not a big fan of those "challenges" - Tiger Challenge, Madden Challenge, NASCAR challenge, etc. - so I tend to stay away from those. And as someone who struggles playing racing games (they're not as easy for me to play as, say, football or golf games) that hindered my ability to build up performance points. So next year, I'd love the chance to build my driver's performance points through means other than the NASCAR challenge. How I fare in a race, for example. I also like the way the older NASCAR editions allowed you to improve your car by buying them. The more money you won, the better pit crew you could hire, or engineers you could hire. I just want additional ways of improving my driver.

    2. Need some in-between settings for us novices - I love this game, but I can't find a good in-between. The Pro settings are too darn hard and the rookie settings are too easy. Tweaking the Pro settings doesn't seem to make a difference. I like the customization options, but I need a few more.

I wish the ranked matches online were default setups.
That would have me playing this game forever.
I have no idea how to setup a car at all. lol.

Me neither, so I try and steal them wherever I can.

I don't play online a whole lot; I just want to be more competitive against the CPU. I do know that running on the default setups puts you at a distinct disadvantage, but I can't hold a line to save my life. What I'd like to get is some help steering without losing my engine power, which is why I'd like to see something in-between the Normal & Pro options.

Online option to choose car setups. Like defaults only, advanced only or just basic setups uses.

Implement a Car setup tuning, where you race and the car setups automatically to how your driving like the club tuning in tiger woods. Add tutorial that shows us how to set up cars.

Presentation. Bring back the end game highlights, pre-game national anthem and all that good stuff. I really would like to see the announcing back.

Total team control. Manually doing pit stops.

          That would be quite helpful.

A trophy presentation would be a nice touch, too.

Which edition was it when the drivers would fight in the garage? That'd be cool to have back in.

          How would that work?

In the 06 Nascar they had Total Team Control. Which would let you switch to a different driver on your team during the race. It was a really fun concept. It was good because if you jumped out to a big lead or crashed and could not continue, you could then take over another driver on your team. I am sure you can youtube a couple video that will show you how it worked.

In one of the older PS1 games during the pitstop you had to corresponding buttons in order to get a good pitstop time.

what do you guys think of something like this: since the team and crew chief are so important in nascar these days, why not put every crew chief in the game for their respective driver. then when you go into pro settings where you have to set up the car to actually be competitive, have the crew chiefs set up the car. and each crew chief would have a rating, so the better the crew chief the better the setup, etc. cause honestly, the drivers arent the ones who set up cars. they provide information and all but its really the crew chief's job.

then say you start a career, you could have a crew chief assigned depending on if you join a current team or not. if not you could hire a crew chief for your car.

thats kind of the jist of the idea. just putting that out there. because i love nascar and nascar games but i have no clue when it comes to setting up a car. so i think this would make it more realistic/better for the gamer. what are your thoughts?

oh yeah and why cant they have driver changes/updates as well as driver ratings changes? since the release date doesnt correspond with the start of the season like every other game just about, the game is only fresh for a lil while until driver changes, etc take place and then it just feels old to me...since the game doesnt come out until june or so we are stuck playing 09 with waaaaay outdated rosters/ratings

After finally submitting to EA and buying NASCAR 09 (my first EA NASCAR game since 2005), I can say I love it. The only gripe is the setup factor. Running strictly on the "Veteran" setups I run a 16.5-8 lap consistently at Bristol. Then I race people who are running 14.8 laps and it just kills it.

I thought that 09 was really solid in the gameplay - please don't go more casual or add gimmicky junk. I like the Own the Track feature. That is kind of a gimmick but doesn't get in the way of the actual gameplay so it is fine. I just don't want any fluff added to the gameplay - like performance points that carried into online :-(.

Ive often thought that the team idea needs to be fleshed out for a career mode in racing games. Other sport titles look at all aspect of the sport while the racing genre seems to be holding onto decade old arcade trends. Why not ask the player use some earnings on crew chief, mechanic and agents. Then based on who you can afford you bring different aspects to the game - better setups, faster stops and better sponsorship/money. Then during your career you work toward getting the best of the best.

Better in-race HUD - something you can actually read that doesn't get in the freaking way.

Fuel consumption and tire wear need to actually be simulated based on driving rather than what appears to be a constant value.

Option to make damage even more realistic...although N09 had a lot of nice features like engine failures etc. What about flats?

Pit Crew that responds to voice commands.

Pit times that reflect actual repairs / changes being made. Lots of damage should take long time to repair. Splash and go should be quick.

Pit and Yellow flag logic needs to be seriously reworked and fuel bugs addressed.

Online needs to have option so host can force specific setups and assists.

Online LEAGUES - every other sports game lets people setup seasons; why don't race games do this?

Overall presentation improved to give pre/post race more of a TV feel. Optional in race ticker as well. Checking standings during race was no good in 09 but that kind of all ties into how bad the HUD was.

i agree with everything you say...i mean the potential of this series would be incredible if EA would implement these ideas, etc into the game. but until EA gets there heads out of their butts and listens to the community then all we can do is dream about it..its too bad they have exclusive rights cause i think someone else could make a much better game

I agree and that is why I won't play online because I am not experienced enough to tune the cars. At least if their was default setup rooms it would give inexperienced players a chance.

                            Love it.

I'd also add in this: you can hire/fire crew chiefs based on their performances (or yours). In addition, make hiring the crew chief part of your team budget. For example, in MLB 2K series you can hire better coaches, managers and scouts, but they'll cost you more. So as team owner you need to decide how much you're going to spend on your staff, research, garage, etc.
