Re: F1/IRL/All Other Forms of motorsports Thread

As always, rain causes chaos. The safety cars really scrambled things up too. Rosberg had built some gap between him and everyone else before that first one came out.

I try not to agree with Hamilton on much of anything, but I join him in laughing at the team orders not to hold up Nico. Then I laugh at Nico for crying that he didn't let him go by. "Don't hold him up" is a lot different than "slow the hell down for no reason and let him pass you." Nico never got close enough to pass, Hamilton was not holding him up, because he couldn't get close enough. But it was dumb to ever really relay that message when Nico was that far back anyway. Whatever controversy there is from this, which should be none, is Mercedes own fault.

Congrats to Ricciardo for sure. Without many long straights, this is a good Red Bull track, and they had superior strategy as well.

Also, congrats to Alonso. I don't think they made enough of the fact that he went 31 laps on the soft tires. That was a hell of a job to keep 2nd when his tires had surely been gone for several laps before he got caught up in the 3-man battle.

Sauber had 2 points spots going there for a while. But they can't seem to do anything right. The two Force India drivers ran into eachother. Raikkonen seemed like he got going in the right direction despite that enormous gaffe they made in qualifying. I went back and watched the replay to see what was up with that. He finished his fast lap with a touch over 9 1/2 minutes to go, so you figure by the time he finishes his in lap and they back him into the garage, there are damn near 8 minutes to, at least 7-7 1/2. And they never put him on the soft tires. That couldn't have been botched much worse.

Mercedes do seem to have some reliability issues popping up though particularly in the brake department. They'll run away with the constructors still, but Hamilton caught on fire, supposedly from a fuel leak. They've both had brake issues before, and Rosberg had some issues early in the race that cost him some time. It fixed itself, but there are issues for them for sure.

I hope this moronic double points race at the end of the year doesn't change the driver's title outcome.

So, Daniel Ricciardo thinks that he still has a shot to win the title.

(I can't post links yet, but if you look at the Sky F1 page you'll see the article.)

If we look at the remaining tracks on the schedule, I don't think he'll be able to win in Spa or Monza, unless we get some failures by the Mercs or rain conditions, etc. If all goes along without problems, I think it'll be a Mercedes and Williams show, followed by the Red Bulls. I believe that at Singapore, he'll have a better shot at victory, but it will still probably be Mercedes dominated. Suzuka, CoTA, and Abu Dhabi will be Mercedes dominated as well I believe. Russia and Brazil will be the best chances for a non Mercedes team to win I believe. While he certainly has the talent to do it, I don't think he'll be able to win the title this year. Of course, with the wacky double points in Abu Dhabi, if he somehow closes the gap to under fifty points, and both Mercs have problems, you never know...

When the Renault and Ferrari engines catch up to the Mercedes, it'll be interesting to see how the field will stack up. I'm particularly interested in how the Williams performs with a closer field. I'm also interested in the Lotus with Mercedes engines, but with Pastor "Maldonadoing" everyone, we might not see!

Aleshin had a brutal crash during practice at Fontana earlier.

So, apparently Vettel is leaving Red Bull...

EDIT: And supposedly heading to Ferrari.

Should be an interesting race with all this rain. Assuming they get more than a few laps in anyway. Sounds like it's getting ready to rain a ton again, and the track is already soaked.

EDIT: This is going to get red flagged soon. Going to be ridiculous if they do two laps and then stop, which would mean everyone would get half points.

Ugly incident with Jules Bianchi. Sounds like he hit one of the cranes/tractors they use to remove cars, sideways. Fingers crossed it's not too serious, though it sounds like he was unconscious and is being taken to the hospital.

Finally saw some of the video of him hitting it. Didn't show up on the broadcast, can't see much but Yahoo has it up. Looks brutal. Glad he's survived and hope he recovers, it's almost hard to believe that whole thing didn't go much worse for him and the guy in the crane and some of the track crew around it. They say he's stable so far.

Yikes. I had been trying to track down a video of it for awhile and that Yahoo article did have it. Ugly.

That's brutal looking at the video. Keep fighting Jules.

If there was no crane he would have either just hit Sutil's car or hit the barriers...

That crash is just terrible for so many reasons. I hope he's able to pull through and recover fully, but the possibilities of that outcome seem rather slim from what I've read about his injuy. After seeing the video though, to me it's pretty amazing that he's alive to still fight for his life.

Without getting into all the factors that really and probably could have prevented the crash from even happening at all, it's just incredibly freaky IMO that one person, could be just that unlucky.. if that's what you want to call it. Just so strange the way the world works sometimes.

I'd rather not talk about that crash. Really ugly and unlucky. Actually still a bit lucky as if he arrived a second or so later he would have hit the tractor straight on, but still unlucky as if he arrived a second earlier or slid a few degrees to either side he would hit the tyre barriers like Sutil.

What is incredible is how the Formula 1 and the whole motorsports community has reacted to this. The teams running the #ForzaJules in their cars this weekend at Sochi, Vergne's initiative in getting stickers made for the drivers to stick to their helmets, even Stoffel Vandoorne's action in pointing at the #ForzaJules in his helmet after getting the pole in GP2.
