Re: F1: 2011 Impressions and Discussion

Not sure what to do with a rain setup but I heard they're slowing the cars down via patch when in the rain on harder difficulties. AI did appear to have more grip than I did when I played.
My disk was scratched a few weeks ago so I havent been able to play for awhile. Im getting a new copy today so I can get my career going again.
Think I might just start over with Williams then work my way to Ferrari this time. Can you start with Sauber in career? I cant remember!

I've played pretty much every racing game ever, and this one, although realistic, is too frustrating for the casual gamer even with brake assist on. That seems to be my biggest problem, is the inability to control the cornering, as I find the brakes not effective enough, meaning that takes too long to slow down. Again, I understand the realism and simulation that the game portrays, but should have put a bit more thought into the fact that the casual more arcade style player may also want to play the game. I am not talking like making the game into a total arcade experience, but could be a bit easier if the user so wanted. Maybe I am just a spaz, but I have a real issue with the braking, anyhow, I read one guy here has run over 500 laps on Australia for practice, man, I praise the guy, but I don't have that sort of time or want,,, I just would like to pick up the game and have a fun experience playing the game without getting frustrated beyond belief. It is a wonderful game, but I truly feel that the difficulty level at the easiest settings is even too much, and will deter many people. I've played dirt 3, shift 2, forza 4, turismo 5 and also the Formula One Championshop on the PS3 , and although challenging in the later stages or when you crank up the difficulty levels, I find them all fun and much easier at their lower setting. Perhaps they can have the option to tone it down a bit in 2012 if the user so desires. Maybe this game is not for me,,, and it's to frustrating that the fun factor is gone for me,,, anyhow my thoughts only

I love F1 2011, it has made a conflict for a long time NHL fan as I haven't really even warmed up the NHL disc in weeks. F1 2011 is amazing, and the difficulty was perfect for me. I slowly have been working my way up to make it more difficult. But I didn't find it too hard as a beginner. For the first week I drove off the course a ton on overbreaking or breaking too late and not being able to steer into corners. I was so bad at staying on track, my wife, definitely not a video game player, asked to try so that she could show me how to stay on the road. She realized how frustrating it was right away, but she also is a perfectionist and had to figure it out. Over the course of the next 3 nights and probably 5 hours she actually had become fairly proficient. She was working in practice and really just focused on getting the hang of the game. If she can learn it I am sure anyone can.

LOL at this "ringing endorsement" for your wife. Better hope she doesn't read these forums.

Okay , I picked this up today and did some practicing. I am using a Microsoft Force Feedback wheel and pedals. What settings are you guys using for traction control? I tried to be a man and have it off but I do donut around corners, even when I'm easy on the pedal.

Congrats on getting the game. Put TC on medium or higher until you get the hang of how the car handles. You may need to adjust your pedals also if they are too sensitive.

I got it today, Steam's weekend sale is F1 2011 and Dirt 3 for $34. I don't think you will ever see F1 in Best Buy for PC as I have heard that like last year, F1 on PC is only released on retail in Europe, kind of like PES.

And to the person having a lot of trouble getting the hang of this game, I feel your pain but stick with it. I got F1 2010 on a Steam sale about 6 months ago, tried it about once a month and couldn't even drive a lap without spinning out or some kind of disaster and I have played racing games for many years. It finally clicked a couple of weeks ago for me and I became hooked and played a whole career season real fast. It was slow going and it wasn't until about race 12 that I finally started kicking up the difficulty level from Amateur to Intermediate and by the end of the season even that was too easy. I recommend keeping the driving line on, while you will need to find your own way to truly excel it is great for beginners and when you are first learning the tracks.

Re: F1: 2011 Impressions and Discussion

I don't have the game yet, but it sounds like they nailed the difficulty part.....

A co-worker of mine is an avid F1 fan, and he filled me in on the sport. Not just anybody can jump in and drive; alot of the great drivers were bred since Day One to drive Formula One cars.

They go thru extensive training and whatnot before they're even allowed to go to the track for a test drive. These cars are technical wonders; that's why the "crew chief" is known as an engineer. In real life you basically need a degree in engineering just to learn how to set up the cars.

As a driver, you need to be extremely phisically fit. The G's they go thru in a typical race would exhaust an ordinary person to the point of blacking out. My co-worker jokes that Juan Pablo Montoya couldn't "cut it" in F1, so he made the switch to Nascar, lol.

Anywho, to those who say the game's just too hard, I'd say, Good! That's the way it should be.....

If you're referring to me, I'm getting better. The key is knowing the tracks like the back of your hand. I'm still learning though as I'm only familiar with a couple tracks. I want to get each down before moving to the next.

When you have TC off you're going to have to get fairly good at making your own setups to be able to push the car to its limits. A good place to start when doing setups is setting your downforce to 1, and working with the rollbars, camber and toe to get a good base of mechanical grip. Although, this year, unlike last year, you will always be faster with TC on....last year it was faster if you could handle driving with TC off.

I am really eager to have a racing sim with offline mode that is fun and more than 1 season, does F1 2011 fit the bill, especially after patches?

New patch just came out today, so I can't be a judge of that just yet....but this game is quite good. Offline career mode is 5 seasons, I believe, and while it isn't a complete sim, it's done pretty well. I'd say it leans toward the sim side more than the casual side. You can have the option to play with as many or as few assists as you want, and can choose to do full race weekends, short race weekends (1 practice, 1 Qualy, Race), or race only.

Initial patch impressions don't seem very good. There's a tire wear bug that causes all your tires to wear during practice sessions even if you don't run a lap on the set. Also, there's talk the AI retirements are maybe a bit excessive.
