No,the game is not centered around kudos. Thats just one aspect of the game. You can choose to ignore that aspect if you are not that interested in it. Powersliding through turns gives you the most points, but taking the correct lines will always get you the fastest time. So it's really up to you how you wanna play, but don't get the idea that PGR2 is less of a racer because of the kudos system.

The kudos system makes you want to run a clean race, not 'rail-ride' to the finish line. Its an incentive to drive correctly, along with giving you rewards for doing so.

Absolutely. PGR 2 requires just as much precision -- if not more -- than a racing game with a damage model. The damage is cosmetic in PGR 2, but you still pay big-time if you play Harvey Wallbanger all race.
Take care,

I have to echo these sentiments. The only real cheat in the game that I use but mostly it's luck is to take a very steep angle so I can plow into the cars and hopefully get a few turned backwards. It doesn't always work and I probably wouldn't try that tactic late in a long race but sometime out of the gate into the first turn you can always just reset it.
Still one little bump into the rail and this game and three of four cars pass you up.
