    Re: The petition is UP!

    >>>Last I checked "being cool" with something and "accepting the risk" of something was the same thing. HOPING something happens is however different.<<<

    Keyz:

    You amaze me, man.

Drivers accept the risk of injury or death in a car. But that doesn't mean they want to do it. And they sure as hell don't HOPE to do it.

    Sheesh ...

P.S.: You never answered my earlier question about types of races. Which race do you consider better: great passing and a couple of debris cautions or a restrictor-plate show at Talladega in which "the big one" takes out 15 fast cars with 40 laps to go?

    Take care,

      Re: The petition is UP!

I would love to know what you definition of "being cool" with something is. There is a big difference between "That's cool!" and "I'm cool with that."

What do you mean by debris cautions. If you mean a beer can on the track that some drunk fan threw over the fence, no, those are ridiculous and are detrimental to the sport. If you mean 15 cars piled up, no, that is too extreme. Here is what I like to see in racing (and if someone says I am not really a race fan because of it, I don't particularly care - opinions are like >0<, you know):

      - I like when drivers use the old chrome-horn to get around a driver.
      - I like when drivers take the air off another guy's spoiler and send them up the track while I am waiting on the edge of my seat to see if he hits the wall.
      - I like when drivers who are victims of these acts throw water bottles at the other drivers showing their displeasure.
      - and YES! I like when cars trade paint! Small collisions are part of the sport. If a guy gets a pushed in fender, I like to watch the crew scramble to fix it up enough and get it back on the track. If a guy has a blow-out because he got into another driver or whatever, I like to see if he can get back on pit road change the tire and get back out without taking further damage (Suppose Matt Kenseth didn't have a flat at Richmond. Would his victory have been as exciting?).
      - Another thing is, during a wreck, don't you get a thrill when the drivers behind the wreck swerve their way through the mess and come out unscathed? If you are going to tell me that isn't a part of the sport, then you better take it up with EA! One of their "MRN Moments" is getting Mayfield through a wreck at Richmond!

      What I don't like is:
      - when ANY driver is injured or killed!
      - when there is no bumping and grinding and everybody respects everybody else and the whole race is dependent on passing skills and car set-up. That is fine for Indy cars. Two Indy cars touch and their days are over. But stock cars are built for a little bumping and the occasional chrome horn. That is what makes NASCAR so exciting to me. Cars can touch and trade paint. Sometimes they get through with no major damage, sometimes the pit crews have to do some extra work and sometimes the driver loses control and wrecks. Not knowing what is going to happen in a contact situation until it does is what PART of the thrill I get out of NASCAR. Another part is watching the pit crews in action. Another part is seeing two cars door-to-door on the final lap heading toward the line. Another is watching a car dive under another car in an attempt to make a fantastic pass. ALL of these parts put together make up the NASCAR experience. Some viewers like to only make their experience up of a few of those parts. Fine. I'm not going to tell anyone they have to appreciate something to get full enjoyment out of a race. But someone telling me that if I enjoy a part that they don't, I'm not a real race fan?!?

If someone watches a race hoping a driver gets killed, it's none of my business. They can take it up with their therapist. As for me, I know what I like (stated in great detail above) and if anyone doesn't like it, that is just too damn bad. There is a name for when people are forced into conformity. If memory serves its called Nazism or Fascism or one of those -isms.

You enjoy the race your way, I'll enjoy it mine.

at least Hangover is honest about what he likes, I think that may be why NASCAR is so popular, but a lot of people won't admit it.

          Hangover:

After reading that, no more needs to be said. But I appreciate your honesty -- seriously.

I just prefer proper driving skill, not demo-derby bullrushes, to be the primary arbiter of success in motor racing, including Winston Cup. Rubbing fenders is fine with me, but shoving a guy aside to win a race is not.

It's just a shame that the "aero push" that's ruining Winston Cup has caused even skilled drivers like Jeff Gordon to use "bump and run" techniques to get to the front. I remember the days when Winston Cup cars were boxy and passes actually could be made without aero push.

          Thanks,
          PK

It would seem that you are nostalgic for the NASCAR of old. I guess the sport is growing and changing as are the fans. What are ya gonna do?

              Re: The petition is UP!

I'm certainly nostalgic for the racing of old.

I'll be the first to admit that there's a hell of a lot more talent in the seats of Winston Cup cars now than there was 10 years ago, thanks to the influx of drivers from all regions of the country and from all forms of racing (open-wheel, off-road).

But the racing isn't nearly as good as it was 10 years ago, when the cars were less dependent on aerodynamics. You never hear drivers bitch after a race anymore -- except for the short tracks and road courses -- about what move this guy made on them, what move that guy made on them, etc. All they cry about is the aero push or the aero edge that Brand X has over Brand Y, etc., except after shows at Bristol, Martinsville, Richmond, the Glen and Sears Point.

I think it's no coincidence that the best races of the year -- at least the purest races of the year -- are those on tracks where aerodynamics play a very minimal role. Yep, the short tracks and road courses.

              Take care,
