Same here. Woke my dogs up.

There was a cameraman right by the fence maybe 50 feet from where the fence is gone. Probably thankful he wore his lucky boxers today. Yikes.

I was at the 2001 Daytona 500, met Dale Sr. and Jr. Sr. signed a jacket for me and gave me a few minutes out of his busy morning.

I thought I had just watched another driver die at Daytona in the 3 tonight ... I have no idea how on earth he walked away from that. That ~190 mph into the catch fence rods with just immediate and sudden stop and then there was just ... nothing left.

Incredible that there were just minor injuries from the debris that went into the stands too.

Wow!! A real testament to all the effort NASCAR puts into making the cars and everything as same as possible for the drivers and fans that Dillon walked away from that and there were apparently only 3 minor injuries to the fans from the debris.

No one was passing the 88 tonight, Jr. was just dominant.

            Congrats on the win Cutter

And with that, I'm going to bed

Unbelievable video SJ. Lucky to be alive. Eerie seeing that happen to the 3 car at Daytona. Brought back some bad memories.

                Congrats cutter.

I was close. They damn near waited until tomorrow (now today) to start this race. I was asleep after they went through the starting lineups. I guess they did it so the ones there could go home as it was already a Sunday night race, but just ridiculous overall. Facebook spoiled it for me but I'll probably skim the recording.

The positive? NBC's coverage was pretty good considering they basically did a 4.5 hour countdown to green. This is a hundred times better than the old NBC coverage with that ******* Weber; still could use less Petty but the whole rain delay probably exaggerated that. Haven't gotten far enough in to know this one, but they showed way too many commercials the last time around. They mentioned 43 miles commercial free to start the race, which is only around 17 laps at Daytona. If they started showing commercials every 10-12 laps after that, here we go again... Needs more Ward though.

Congrats Cutter. Terrible luck for Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards who i picked for the race. Also glad to see Austin walked away from that crash.

Congrats cutter. Glad that Dillion walked away from that wreck. It just makes it more upsetting thinking about losing sr when you compare his wreck to some of these wrecks that we have seen over the past ten years or so; what could have been if some of these things were implemented sooner?

Thanks. That feels slightly better than back to back last place finishes. Man, what a testament to the safety of these cars.

Dale knew about the HANS ... he insisted his son use it. He knew that a certain kind of impact would kill him (Neil Bonnet was his close friend and died from nearly the same exact angle and speed of impact 7 years earlier in practice) ... it's just that safety wasn't really his first priority. I mean ... he raced most of a season with a bone sliver pressing into his spinal cord. As smart as he was in a lot of ways, "Ironhead" was a good nickname for him when it came to certain things.

Remember when the first reports came out and suggested his modified harness had failed and that's what caused it and people flipped out? In reality it was simply angle of impact plus the side impact just prior causing his neck to move in a way it simply couldn't withstand. I think there's even some question as to whether the HANS would have saved him given the very specific circumstance of how the wreck occurred.

The thing that always gets me is that it really didn't look that serious. I was in the left section of the grandstands, the old Earnhardt section, so it wasn't that far away and I thought he'd be getting out and throwing a tantrum... until Kenny went over and then motioned for the rescue crews.

The part they don't show on the documentaries is that Kenny took his helmet off and vomited a few seconds later. Everyone who was watching had a pretty good idea at that point. When they pulled him out and he was just limp like a rag doll and no wave to the fans ...

I've never been back to a race again and I probably won't ever go. I'm glad I went that weekend, and I'm glad I had a chance to at least meet him for a moment and shake his hand, because he was the hero of my adolescence and young adulthood, but all these years later it's still hard to turn on the race and watch from home.

Last night I was in a bad place in my head when I saw what was left of that 3 and Junior's crew rushing over to it. It has been kind of difficult to see the 3 back on the track, as is; that wreck at that track...
