    The Best Racing AI

I am not trying to start a flame war here. I just would like to know which game has good racing AI and why. I just started to play TOCA 2 and I am 25% done and this game is so raw. Is this the Winning 11 of racing games or is there something as good.

I played Colin McCrae 04 and enjoyed it.

    Peace

    Re: The Best Racing AI

As far as racing AI for road-racing games, TOCA 2 is king. No other game comes close to matching it on the current generation of consoles.

World of Outlaws Sprint Cars 2002 for the PS2 also has excellent racing AI if you're looking for an oval racer.

    Take care,

I second the opinion of TOCA's AI being the most realistic and human-like of any console game. World of Outlaws was pretty damn sweet as well, but TOCA is head and shoulders above anything else out there at the moment.

Forza promises the moon, so we'll see if that still holds true a month from now, but at the moment TOCA 2 is the unquestioned champ.

I really couldnt believe how many diffrent type of races you can have in one game and I got it for 9.99. I read the gamespot interview and I will pre order the next game in the series. The developers seem to take racing games really seriously.

My other question is what make good racing ai. How can you tell. I remember when Sony's GT came out, I thought had great AI because they took great racing lines now alot of hardcore fans doesnt like their AI.

I am looking forward to Forza also but TOCA 2 is getting me into racing games again. Nice feeling.

              Grunt:

To me, good racing AI constitutes computer-controlled cars defending their lines, taking different lines, occasionally using contact to shove your car out of the way in an aggressive move, losing traction and crashing on their own from time to time, etc.

TOCA 2 nails that. None of the Gran Turismo games have it at all. The CPU cars run around nose-to-tail on rails on a preset line in nearly every race.

I think the AI of NASCAR 2005 is leaps and bounds ahead of that in any other EA NASCAR console game. It's pretty damn good, especially on the restrictor plate tracks and with the NASCAR modifieds.

That said, I still think World of Outlaws 2002 has exceptional racing AI for a console game, better than NASCAR 2005. Oh, what I wouldn't give for an Xbox port of WoO 2002. Too bad it never will happen. It's the only game I still miss from when I owned a PS2.

                  Re: The Best Racing AI

GT's AI follows that line, and that's the problem. The "best line" isn't always the best idea, but the GT cars follow it like gospel. Good AI, like in TOCA2, will adapt to car positioning. If they have a car in front of them, they'll brake earlier or try to drive it deeper into the corner to take the position away. They might bang into each other and spin each other out. If you're next to them you can be confident that the car won't cut down on you like you're not even there, following that all-important "best line". You can bump the cars a bit and there's some give and take against the AI in TOCA that you just don't get with other games.

The biggest compliment I can give it is that it's about the only game in my stable that I've never even contemplated selling. In nearly wreck I've had against the CPU, I can instantly go back to a replay and see where I screwed up, not the other way around. The CPU will rarely wreck you or do something completely assenine, or if it's the CPU's fault, it won't happen in the same spot twice. You can race it "smartly", if you will. If you don't force a bad situation, you will get through an entire race without incident. In GT, if you race a smart race, you still might be driven into a wall or spun out by a car that doesn't see you right next to him (or seemingly doesn't care). That's not AI, that's a predetermined race that you're just allowed to roll around on the track in the middle of.

AI is adaptable, human-like behavior from CPU cars that changes every time you change your position in a pack. Try it in TOCA2, it's noticeable. Try it in GT and get banged around like a pinball.

Ditto, along with Colin McRae Rally 2005 and Winning Eleven 8 soccer. Those three games are the only untouchables in my gaming library.

I think so. On the surface, CMR 2005 has a much deeper and wider-branching career mode. It also has online play on Xbox Live, which CMR 04 lacks.

Regarding the nitty-gritty, CMR 2005 did an excellent job of reducing the central-axis steering that plagued CMR 04 somewhat. By that, it seemed the car rotated on a central-spike axis when turning on gravel, mud and snow instead of sliding through the corners like a proper rally car should.

CMR 04 is a very good game; CMR 2005 is a great game. There's your difference, in a nutshell.

I have another question. What is the best steering wheel for the XBOX and does a steering wheel add value to the game for a casual fan, Thanx for the feedback.

Maybe I'm showing my age here, but what do you mean "raw"?

As in unrefined, unfinished, and generally lacking? Or is it some newer term that means "good" nowadays? Pardon my age, I'll go grab my geritol and depends now.
