Re: Should i attempt the "towel trick"

ill try to bring some credibility to this thread...

my friend told me that his 360 broke, and he read on the internet where it said he should wrap it in a towel to force an overheat, and that fixed it for him...

i laughed at him and called him crazy, but then found out that it did actually work for him...

i honestly have no clue how it work, but i know that for at least one person out there, this trick actually worked...

        ^^^^^^^

man, i knew the OP was going to get crucified for starting this thread. LOL... the reason he asks this and the reason some people have gotten temporary results, and in some cases permanent results, is that the soldered contacts on the motherboard come undone and cause the gpu and such to loosen. this causes a hardware failure and the resulting rings of death. the fix works on the premise that the heat will reheat the soldered contacts causing them to reattach to the motherboard. the gpu and other subassemblies then work as designed and stop malfunctioning. this only works for a few days or more because eventually the solder breaks loose again when the 360 heats up after extended gameplay. the only real solution to this malfunction is to reheat the solder points, let them smelt to the motherboard, apply a special heat sink compound which resists detaching, and in one repair on youtube the guy installed a cpu cooling fan to keep the console from overheating and possibly weakening the subpar solder contacts. the guy took his dvd drive out of the console case, mounted it on top of the console, and mounted the cpu cooling fan in the vacant space. where there's a will, there's a way.

What's up with you guys and all your hateful replies?

Honestly, I was just asking a question to see if anyone else had tried the towel trick to revive their xbox 360.

No one's hating, they're just having a little fun because the remedy sounds a little silly that's all. As other's have said they've heard of people trying it and working.

Re: Should i attempt the "towel trick"

I guess I just don't understand the reason behind most of the negative comments. I mean if i don't understand something, i don't just open my mouth and act like i know the answer that would just prove how ignorant i am.

In the #3 post in this thread, Pistonpete posted a link explaining the towel trick which added credibility to my question.

Yet posters still decided to reply in a negative manner even though the link explained everything.

                      Heel,
I don't think he's being an emo. This isn't "Gamefaqs" where people can expect to get flamed for asking a question. This is OS where people are for the most part helpful, well infomed and usually not all that judgemental when someone asks questions. Your opinion is that it is "silly". What is your opinion based on? Have you researched this? I happen to know someone who tried this and it worked, at least temporarily. Besides, if his 360 is not working what does he have to lose?
By the way Heel, I use your 2K baseball sliders. They're great!

Stay with me here. You are wrapping a towel around an electronic device to try and get it to purposely overheat. And you are doing this because, your system broke down due to overheating, so you are going to overheat it again to get it to work?

Wow!!! I can't possibly see why I thought that was silly!

Have you tried to clear the cache from your hard drive? I was having problems with freezing and then the red lights. I cleared the cache and my 360 seems to work fine.

the concept of wrapping a towel around an electronic device to purposely overheat it is silly. I am sorry but it is.

I don't know if it works and don't care if it does, because there is no way on Earth that I would purposely overheat my electronic device.

Maybe I have gone stupid, but don't we try and prevent electronic devices from overheating?
