I'm still waiting on both the PS3 and 360. I'll only buy one, and right now it's up to them. I've held off on the 360 because of the (lack of) reliability, and the PS3 because of the price. Whichever one solves their respective issue first will be the one I go with.

My only question is, when you go into the store this fall to buy a 360, how will you know if the system on the shelf has the new chipset? Will it have a huge sticker on it that says, "NEW 65nm CHIP!"? Will it be a different SKU? I just don't see how you would be able to tell the difference.

Back to the NPD, I still can't believe how many people are buying PS2s.

well for me, the whole issue was games. The 360 has far better games right now, so it got my money right now. When the ps3 gets better games, I'll buy one. Since I don't give a crap about HD movies, the $600 price would be wasteful for someone like me right now.

Methinks Guitar Hero/II probably has a lot to do with that. Even with the original GH songs being available on the 360's DLC.

I believe the fact that the PS2 is selling like crazy is the major problem for the PS3 right now (along with the lack of system selling games). Most people are going to buy the PS2 as long as great games like God of War 2 are still being released. Once the PS2 is no longer supported by Sony, I believe you will see a lot of Sony loyalists purchasing the PS3. As much as some bashed Microsoft for no longer supporting XBOX 1, I think it trememdously helped 360 sales - there was no other alternative for Microsoft supporters.

When comparing $129 to $599, I think that people will hold off on spending that $599. You do make a good point about supporting a last gen system and how it affects sales, but I think that Sony also couldn't cutoff their fanbase that they spent 2 generations building to push them in a $600 option.

I look at these numbers, I'm just at disbelief how badly the 360 and PS3 are selling. Even the GBA is almost outselling the PS3 when people can buy the DS, but their buying older hardware. I think at this day and age, people want to play videogames at a cheap price and not wanting to shell out $400, $500, or even $600.

if the 360 and ps3 still sell poorly around the holidays, then it's time to worry. It's summer, and only a handful of great games are coming out for a few months. You can't really say any of the recent 360 releases had a chance at being system sellers. They will be coming in the fall though.
