I hadn't been there for a while, but I really like the new PSN website setup. Much cleaner.

          Hey, so....

If I restored my PS3 to factory settings (long story) and changed my PSN gamer tag, would I be able to retain anything from my console? Saved game data, trophies, wallpapers, etc? Anything?

I could back it up to a flash drive if necessary, but I have no idea what's tied to my gamer tag, what's tied to my system ID, etc. I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't find any concrete info on the subject, so any help would be appreciated.

Once you change your PSN ID, your trophies will only be associated with the old PSN ID. There are some save files that are tied to your PSN ID. One recommendation is to leave the old PSN ID still on the system, just do not log-in with that one. If there is content you purchased under the old ID, it will be available for you.

If you change gamertag you won't keep trophies (or saves, I think).

But if you have downloads you want to keep, just back up with the current user intact, keep him on the PS3 so your new user/tag has access to all of it still.

I have a Japan, Hong Kong, US and Australian user (for the best of all PSN releases) and while I only play on one of the users, all others have access to what each of them has purchased.

When I recently backed up to move to a large hdd I installed, I backed up to an external hdd so I retained all of it. There's nothing more annoying than having to download gigs of stuff a second or third time.

Good God, I love this system, but geez....my xbox updates games in about 2 milliseconds. I just rented the show and I'm staring at the damn update data screen for about 16 minutes now. This is terrible.

                    Come on Sony.

Yeah, I hear ya man... MS puts all sorts of limits to their updates (including frequency and size of the patch, which I've heard was 4 MB) but the flip side is that you can get wholesale changes with the PS patches as opposed to the bite sized stuff on the 360.

My buddies were like "WTF?" when I had to install the gamefiles and the patches to The Show and Heavy Rain in the same evening. I usually just change the channel while it installs.

PSN is odd... sometimes it rolls and sometimes it's slow. When I downloaded the GOW demo, I had it going at 2mb per second. Fastest I've ever seen on PSN.

That's because of the bluray drive though, as the 360 doesn't have to load data to the HDD.

The console philosophies are also just different. MS wants to keep patches and installing to a minimum, and even requires that all XBLA demos allow you to unlock the full game through them. If you download a demo on PSN, you have to install that, then download the full game separately and install that if you want to buy it.

Quite a lot of PS3 games don't install at all, so it's not 'because of the bluray drive'.

And there are also quite a few PSN games that allow the demo to be upgraded/unlocked.

And maybe it's due to where I live but I have found the PSN download speeds extremely quicker than anything I used to get on Xbox Live.

What? I've DLed at least a dozen PSN games as demos, and unlocked them without having to redownload it.

actually it is because the bluray drive. Look it up for yourself. The developers that do game installs do so because of loading times. Obviously some games will be better optimized or do things in a different way that lets them get around it.
