Re: Xbox Live Marketplace and Live Arcade discussion Part III

My problem with Xbox Live Arcade is that it's 5% feast, 95% famine. They can only cram so many puzzle games onto Live... but almost weekly, they push another one.

Granted, this week's Speedball 2 has potential, and I'll check it out.

But just when I thought Live Arcade was starting to push out some quality stuff with Castlevania S.O.N., minigolf, and the revamped version of TRON (which has yet to see the light of day for some reason) I've been let down.

..especially with that Wing Commander game...talk about rancid...

MS needs to start taking XBXLA a bit more seriously. I'm sick of 48 variations of the Tetris concept.

I'm also a Wii owner, and although my 360 is my system of choice, the virtual console kicks the heck out of XBXLA. I realize Nintendo has a bigger database of games to pull from because of their system history, but MS needs to do something to compete on the "downloadable games" front.

Any impressions of E4 (Every Extend Extra Extreme)? It got a pretty good review on IGN and I'm looking for a new Live Arcade game, but to be honest, even after reading the review I'm not entirely sure I really get the concept.

It's pretty good. Definitely worth checking out the demo. It's a weird concept but basically you're trying to create the biggest chain of explosions as you can. If you time your explosions to the music you get bigger explosions. There's also a mode that's sort of similar to geometry wars where you fly around and shoot stuff. It took me a few minutes to get into, but it got pretty addictive once I figured out what I was doing.

Mutant Storm Empire coming to XBLA next Wednesday (800 points)

You may remember Mutant Storm Reloaded as one of Xbox Live Arcade's better earlier shooters. Those with even longer memories may remember the original Mutant Storm's popular presence on Xbox Live Arcade for Xbox 1.

The new one, Empire, is similar but enjoyably different. Using two-stick shooter controls, it tasks you with blasting your way through 16 levels, full of "beasties" who need to be blown away to make progress.

Its strength lies in the quality of the increasingly devious level design, which changes pace and style often enough to keep you guessing, despite maintaining a sensible difficulty curve.

You can tackle things alone in one of two ways - Adventure mode is a straightforward trek through all 16 levels, with a high score awarded for your best streaks between the loss of the six lives you get per level, and the ability to restart on any unlocked level.

Then on top of that you've got Tally mode, which tasks you with trying to set a top score for each individual level, and then builds an overall score for the entire game out of your best efforts.

There are of course leaderboards, not to mention co-operative modes offline and over Xbox Live, and 12 fairly tricky Achievements to unlock.

Need for Speed ProStreet demo is up too.

Tried Exit, might be the most boring game I've ever played. Thank God for demos, promptly deleted it. Didn't even try Battlestar.

The Need for Speed demo doesn't work, I tried it a few times, it just sits at the car screen saying push A to begin. Well, A doesn't work, start doesn't work, nothing works other than going back to the dash. Very odd.
