Thanks for the great vid, Flaw.

What games would benefit the most from loading from the HDD? Should you go with heavy-loading games or games you play a lot?

I would install the games that you play a lot, and I would say heavy loading games like RPG's would benefit the most. If you're unsure, you can always just install and delete games. I think the biggest benefit regardless of the game is going to be the fact that you won't have to listen to the DVD drive anymore.

Hot from the Microsoft keynote at the Tokyo Game Show comes more retro arcade action. Been jonesing to play more Arkanoid ever since that thing came out back in XXX? It was Breakout on steroids, and ate quarters like Cookie Monster eats chocolate chip cookies. Super Arkanoid and Space Invaders Extreme will be out on XBLA this winter, and it'll be joined next year by Metal Slug 7 , R-Type and The King of Fighters '98: Ultimate Match.

The games will all be updated with new graphics, music, two-player and online modes, and will do a good job towards filling that vintage hole in your heart.

The first thing you notice while using the new UI is how fluid and dynamic it is. Microsoft wasn't content to just create some static screens and call it a day. Many of the menus have multiple animations and 3D elements at work, which give the software life. Your avatar sits on the menu, fully rendered, loafing around on your screen. Moving from section to section is so fluid that you stop thinking about what your doing with the controller. There's also the Spotlight menu subset, which highlights the games and features of the Xbox you use the most, so that you don't have to waste time surfing menus. And this efficient mindset extends thoughout the entire Xbox UI.

A new change is that when you hit the home button, a medium-sized box pops up in the middle of your screen with multiple blades that can be shuffled by moving the analog stick left and right. This is a quick menu of sorts that streamlines the entire menu into a no nonsense, text based interface that lets you browse and navigate whatever information you need with a swiftness. You can look up friends, change games, adjust settings, go to your gamer profile, or launch the full dashboard. This was designed around the original Xbox UI, with the seasoned gamer in mind who just wants to carry out a specific task with no fuss. What's nice it is that it doesn't overwhelm the screen like the original UI did in terms of size and layout.

The best aspect of the guide dash is the ability to quick launch into a game. You can do this while in the main dashboard, while watching a movie, or while playing another game.

If you're playing Texas Hold 'em and decide instead you want to play Fable II (which is sitting in your disc drive), hit the guide button and quick launch to Fable II. You'll hope from Texas Hold 'em right into Fable II. You can quick launch into any of your XBLA games or what's in disc. This works nicely when you're waiting for friends to log in. You can do something solo, then quick launch into a game with friends when everyone is online.

Parties gravitate to the front of the community blade. The cool thing about NXE parties is that it's not tied to a game in any way. You can gather a party and do whatever you like separate from your friends. You can keep communicating on the party channel if you like and then all hop to the same game when the mood hits you. Let's say you and your friends all want to play Gears of War 2 tonight (well, who wouldn't?). But you don't want to start until everyone is online. So you start a party. While waiting, you're playing Castle Crashers with your buddy, while another friend is editing her avatar and yet another is playing Viva Piñata. When that last friend shows up, you can all hop to Gears of War 2. The NXE party system exists outside of any party system in a game. And you can stay on your party channel rather than listen to strangers swearing at you on Xbox Live.

On the tech side, the new Live completely overhauls the system and gives it a whole new foundation. In the current setup each blade is a hard-coded custom built page. The new Live uses a modular system, where the framework is there to allow all the content to be dynamically created at any time. This provides the ability to juggle things around without ever needing to bring the system down or push out a new update. If they want to make changes they just implement them on the Live servers, and you see them the next time you load it up.

I'm really looking forward to the new dash on 11/19. It'll be almost like getting a new console.
