If you bought a USB to IDE cable, you've got the wrong cable. You need a USB to SATA cable.

As far as installing the 400GB into the PS3, no need to really do anything before hand... even if you format it from your PC, you'll still need to format it with the PS3 so that it can also install the software. Either way though, you should be able to use the quick format which if I remember right, really didn't take all that much time (less than 10 minutes maybe?).

I'm not really sure what exactly you are asking, but the PS3 HDD is encrypted and can only be read by the PS3 when it is installed as the main HDD for the PS3.

How I would do it, assuming you don't have another 40GB storage device.

1. Plug 400GB HDD into PC with USB

2. Format (FAT32) (you'll need another utility, like this because windows won't format anything over 32GB as FAT32)

3. Plug 400GB HDD into PS3 with USB

4. Do system backup on the PS3 to USB HDD

5. Plug 400GB HDD into PC and move the PS3 backups to PC HDD

6. Remove 40GB HDD from PS3, insert 400GB HDD, start PS3 format of 400GB

7. Plug 40GB into PC USB

8. Format 40GB (FAT32)

9. Move PS3 backups you copied to PC before to the 40GB HDD

10. Plug 40GB into PS3 USB, use system utility to restore backup

I'm not sure if there is a quicker method, but that is what I would do. Backing up the whole thing with the backup utility will copy everything over, so you don't have to cherry pick or have saves fail because they can't be copied.

Oh, and he's right, if it's USB to IDE it's the wrong thing.

Yeah, sorry for saying USB to IDE, that's just what I read on the side. It's SATA, I just wasn't paying attention to what I wrote.

The only reason I'd say your method is risky Burns11 is because there is one point where I actually don't have any information on either hard drive except for my computer hard drive. I don't want to risk somehow not being able to get it on there. Believe me, that stuff happens.

Oh, and for some reason my 400GB hard drive isn't being recognized by anything. It's not the cable though like I said. It recognized my PC HDD with no problem. I even tried putting it in the PS3 and it was no go. But attaching it to the PC I can't seem to access it. I can choose to safely remove it and stuff so it actually sees that it's there, but I can't do anything to it. Weird... I just opened it for the first time today despite having it for probably a month now.

Sony might not have the firmware update for the netflix app ready. Regardless, as long as it's working, they get to release it before the upcoming holiday. The holiday battle with the 360 should be interesting.

So they have the App ready on disc but not to download? Seems odd and hopefully in the future they make it downloadable.

Unless Sony/Netflix found something on the PS3 that might make Netflix exploitable as a downloadable App.

Your only other option is to get some other USB data storage device that can hold the system backup.

Without knowing more about what cable you bought and what HDD you have (and really seeing the thing for myself) it's hard to say exactly what you have going on with your HDD. Could be that it is just a bad HDD. When you say you can't actually do anything to it, what have you tried doing to it?

do you also have a powersource connected to it? just plugging in a sata to usb cable isn't going to do it because there's no power to the hard drive.

WOW, just got my slim in the mail today, and man do I love it much better then the fat boy, to me the size is great and I have so much more space. The system seems still; very well built. I'm loving it, and it so quite then it sounds like it's off.

A friend of mine just sent me a link to an annoucement that "Play TV HD" is being released in Australia in October to be used with the ps3.

Have you guys had any experience with it?
