Ack! Was this already a replacement PS3? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Man, I don't think I've ever owned a sony product that didn't need replacing. Monitors, TV's, audio receivers, cassette walkman... you name it: they've all broke down.

Yeah, from 2 years ago almost to the day - the first one died due to overheating issues. I'm sure you do remember it because it was right in the middle of our Hot Shots Golf meetups.

I'm web browsing now about how to open up the PS3 and clean the lens - it's way out of warranty so I have no qualms about doing that.

yea but will they take psn cards
Depends on what area of a hooker you would use to redeem them.

I still have an 80GB fatty.

I also have a slim that has yet to be opened.

already do that. But great advice.

Opened it up - cleaned it thoroughly including the Blu-Ray lens...still nothing.

Guess I'll see what I can do about selling this thing - that is, after I get all the files transferred over to a new Slim PS3.

Also, damn it's a lot harder to get into the PS3 than it was for PS2.

Are you going to use that new PS3 backup utility that does the transferring over your home network if you get a Slim before you sell off the broke PS3? That way seems a lot better than the backup and restore option to a external hdd. I'm curious of how well that method works.

Not exactly...it's the one where you connect two PS3's directly via ethernet cable. Maybe we're talking about the same thing, but I don't really see that as a "home network".

I agree that it sounds much better than the backup/restore, because my Gran Turismo save probably won't copy over any other way.

yeah I'm talking about the one where you connect them with an ethernet. I say home network just because that's how I have mine connected in my house because I have two up and running PS3s.

Man, how do I wish you could share saves between two PS3s on a network though. That would be awesome.

That method is a nice feature.

As for the back up and restore method to a new HDD. I did it two weeks ago, and the good news is everything copied over. All copyrighted material, and all 13 copy protected saves including GT5.

Now I do not know if it is due to them relaxing the restrictions in newer firmware, or the fact that it was done on the same PS3 containing the same MAC address.

Was done on an 80 gig fatty. And I do know the firmware is still stored on the mainboard and not HDD like the newer models. Thus I did not have to upgrade the firmware before the restore like you do a HDD swap in a slim. But that probably has nothin to do with it. I think the restrictions may have been relaxed when they added the new PS3 to PS3 feature considering that in the past on older firmware copy protected material had issue.

In case anyone's wondering about the length of this process, it looks like it'll take an hour + to transfer over about 50 GB worth of stuff from my old PS3.

Also, it prompts you to deactivate the old system before starting this process, so your downloaded content can be reactivated on the new one afterward.

Well, I think my ps3 is going to bite the dust pretty soon. Literally after a minute of turning it on sitting at the xmb, the fan gets really loud. I have cleared the vents and other stuff of dust. It's a 60gb original fatty and I've had it for years, 06 or 07 don't remember. I don't really have any important saves as I pretty much play sports games, but the GT5 save can't even be backed up, which is kind of lame.

If you use the back up utility to an external device, it will copy the save and restore it.

My old PS3 kept freezing on me, and getting worse and worse. Didn't matter what game, and it got to the point where it was freezing after five minutes of play time. I had everything backed up, and had installed a 240GB hard drive, so I put the old one back in, and traded it in for a slim. Now, for some reason, my slim won't recognize the 240. Do I have to reformat it, or get a new one?
