Just a quick question. I think the answer is yes, but wanted to be sure.

      Long story short.

I had a 40 GB fatty, upgraded the HDD to 500GB about 4 months ago. Got the YLOD last night. Bought a 160 GB slim this afternoon, I will be able to put the 500 GB HDD in the slim and continue my happy gaming life correct?

Answer is no. PS3 HDDs are encrypted and tied to the console, so the only thing that can read the data on that HDD is the PS3 that wrote it.

Exactly, if you put that 500gb into your new console the first thing it will do is ask you to format the hard drive. Doing that will erase all the data.

Happened to me to. I was able to use a heat gun to temp fix my fatty long enough to do the data transfer to my slim using an ethernet cable.

Best bet is to try and fix the YLOD and then transfer the data over.

This is why every now and then you should do a backup, not on on PCs, but the console as well.

Yeah i got lazy. I did that before I changed HDDs. Moving and stuff I didn't keep up with it. No real stuff that I would lose though.

Me too, the last time I backed up was during the PSN outage which coincidentally is also when my fatty went YLOD.

I am still on my 3 year old 80gig MGS4 Bundled (500GB HDD put in, in January) Fatty... and it is still pumping heavy gaming strong (knocks on wood).

But I am backing it up, since I read everyone's horror stories!

But I know I will be fine, better safe than sorry however!

The thing I miss most of my fatty is the 4 usb ports. I had the 80gb, non-bundled though, (manufacture date of April '07, bought in Dec '07) last me till April '11....so 3 years 4 months-ish. Got no warning, just bam! Stopped working one day.

                        Back them up gentlemen.

I still need to pull out the 400gb hdd that is in the fatty and throw it in an external case and start using that as my backup drive. Currently I'm using the 80gb that came with the fatty to back up my new 320gb slim.

And that, my friend, is why I put mine off. Afraid to commit to a couple hours+ of not using the ps3 for anything.

Thanks for this. I did this with My GF's hair drier and I am attempting to back everything up. Hopefully it will stay powered up long enough to back it up, 2 hours and 5 minutes. I turned it on earlier and after about 5 minutes it shut down, do to being too hot. So we shall see. But thanks Mabster, this trick might've just worked.
