It makes me feel like Japanese studios just have no clue when it comes to online functionality. First, you have the Nintendo mess with playing online. One of my friends with a Wii went so far as to say, "Who cares about online play?" when I pointed out the online flaws in the system. Then Konami pulls this space-case maneuver.

We'll it looks like the DTS HD MA DECODER is gonna need to be fix via another FIRMWARE Update as the decoder is not decoding many 7.1 movies properly. Specifically New Line titles.

This is a Sony issue... they haven't properly implimented the decoder...

I have spoken to DTS and New Line about why this happens on certain pieces of hardware.

DTS-HD/MA has 7 supported channel configs... the only two 7.1 configs being used right now are 7.1 with side surrounds at 90 degrees and back surrounds at 150 degrees, and 7.1 with rear surrounds at 120 degrees and back surrounds at 150 degrees...

The NL titles use the later for logos, and the former for features.

The decoder should simply pass the side or rear surrounds out the same outputs, regardless of where they are physically placed.. this is certainly a decoder issue, and should've been caught during QC.. it might've been, and should be easily correctable.

EDIT: As I was typing this, shamus provided the wonderful pictures.. the two formats I was speaking of are represented in the first two diagrams, and are actually DTS formats 1 and 5 if memory serves...

That's my real beef with all of these updates... they seem preoccupied with making small tweaks to bluray playback or high-end audio stuff that 25 people can actually take advantage of and ignoring things that would make gaming MUCH better, like in-game XMB.

Most of the time, I think to myself as I start the download, "why do I have to download this?"

well while I don't use bluray at all, Sony did use the ps3 as a trojan horse to get the format into homes. I use it only for games, but can't deny that there's a very large percentage of ps3 owners that either only use it as a movie player, or use it more than games. It also shows that Sony knows what matters when most of the updates are for bluray playback, and almost never for major gaming upgrades.

Maybe that'll change, maybe it won't. I just don't see why it has to be required firmware updates when things like this could wait until I actually care to watch $30 bluray movies.

Anyone know a way to clean the fan on the PS3? I have a 60gb and I've noticed that over the past few weeks, my fan has gotten considerably louder when I play. I used to hardly hear it until I had played for at least and hour or so. Now it comes on after about 5 minutes of play and is fairly loud (for the PS3 anyway.....sounds nothing like 360 though). I've read that dust on the fan can cause the increase in noise and fan speed and since I've had mine for 1 1/2 years, I figure that it's got to be fairly dusty.

people around the internet think it's something for a new Siren game. It's a survival horror game that would appeal to japanese gamers enough for a countdown on the site.
