Besides both having great franchises, you had Sega focus on new styles of marketing with slogans like Sega does what Nintendon't. They also got enough of the market share away from Nintendo, that Nintendo got scared and opened the box that led to where the industry is now. It was Nintendo that brought Sony into the console business, who has completely dominated the videogame industry longer than Nintendo ever did.

I'll go with SNES vs. Genesis simply because at that time it was all about the games. No Blu-Ray/HD-DVD battle and no online gaming/game downloads/DLC/movie downloads/etc battles, it ws about the games. At that point there were also a lot more exclusive titles which made picking between the two a big decision, with the current-gen you are getting the same games, there are probably less than 5 exclusive titles for each system right now that I would be interested in owning.

SNES v SEGA ....no question. The fight had a plumber pitted against a hedgehog. And as was said, there wasn't any of this online, DLC stuff, we play games but also play DVD's and other such stuff. It was completely about the games and how they played.

And the fact that people STILL debate which system was better TODAY!

Maybe 15 years ahead from now, we might say PS3/360 was a bigger fight, but I think the ramifications of the fights are totally different. This fight was also about the entertainment business as a whole in regards to format. Then again, you can never tell if someone will come up with an even better format in the near future and kick blu-ray in the junk...

Atari vs Intellivision would even be before 360/PS3 IMO.

No Doubt SNES vs. Sega.. That also benefited the gamer since both companies were pumping out great games. They worried more about gameplay moreso than current day where its more about graphics & how it looks. You could play some of those games now & they play better than some games that are out now. They tried to hook you with the story & gameplay. Didn't matter what genre it was, there were multiple games for you on each console that made it worthwhile and were had to own games... Each did have strenghts & weaknesses, Sports games were one of Sega's strengths, but SNES had RPG's. Not to say the other didn't have those games, but each system had its games and a few were cross-platform.

All in all it was a great time for the consumer & ended up with classic games that will always be remembered. Yeah some haven't held up over time, but some to this day are still a blast to play

SNES vs Genesis was clearly a bigger battle. As someone said above, the amount of exclusive titles was staggering compared to what you see now.

I'd say SNES vs Sega on the grounds that I still hate Mario.

Funny thing is,the Genesis might have won that war had the SNES not gotten the exclusive rights to Street Fighter 2. Sega was doing well until that happened.

I agree with most people here. The SNES vs. Genesis "war" was the biggest, no doubt. I think the mascots had alot to do with it as well. Plus, at that time, videogaming was primarily for kids. You didn't really see this huge swell of adults joining the gaming fray (aside from some older guys playing Bill Walsh College Football or Mortal Kombat on the Genesis). You had that back and forth battle going on in middle school during recess.

I don't know..genesis benefitted from being out on the market earlier. The SNES beat the hell out of it when it got rolling. Donkey Kong Country was the best looking 16 bit game ever made, and it looked next gen when it came out. Rare was amazing then, even having Killer Instinct. Nintendo would have put stuff like that out regardless.

The SNES just got better and better, while the genesis was eating dust. The whole reason why they came out with the CD and 32x stuff was because the genesis was looking like *** compared to snes stuff.

Apart from Mario, Zelda and Final Fantasy made the SNES my gaming system of choice. That war was huge with all the exclusives.

Now by not owning a PS3, the only things that I'm rally missing so far is Drakes fortune & the SHow. The Genesis & SNES each had 20+ really good games that were exclusives. But once the genesis turned to gimmicks it was over. What was that crazy Sega CD game wwith Dana Plato from different strokes starring in it? She was trapped in a house and people were trying to break in. That game was horrible, yet addicting at the same time.
