If you have a custom theme, the new icons show up as a bunch of question marks.

I don't have either of those problems with the XMB quit or theme icons not showing up.

I use a theme and in-game, I get the default XMB icons, not my theme icons.

I have to say, my only gripe about this update is the lack of a visual indicator that you have new messages. I'm referring to the "Received" icon. It's just there... I have to go in and constantly look to see if I missed any messages.

Sort of like checking the mailbox in real life all the time when you're not really expecting anything. Beyond annoying. Just give me a damn little number on top of the icon or something like a bubble (ala iPhone).

It was said that you wouldn't be able to play music anywhere until the game patched it in... so if you can do it now, I'd be happy it even works.

sigh why cant sony make updates that work instead of enablers for all ps3 games instead of leaving it up to the developers "Patch it in"

The updates do work, but Sony isnt programming the games, the developers are. If they dont put a feature in it wont support it. Its like if the developers dont put a sprint button in, Sony cant just create it, its not supported

They don't, it's up to the developers to patch them in, or place them in future games. Third party games will probably start having them this fall. I'd bet dollars to donuts that they will mirror 360 achievements, since that will make it easier on the developers.

PSN is different than XBL. You're still thinking in the XBL way of doing things, since it's a closed network, and MS has all the control, they update and every game follows. With PSN, Sony updates the network, but can't update the games because it's not on them.

I just about finished downloading the update but then it brought me to the main menu but the menu has been blank for like 30 minutes and I can't turn my system off. Anyone know why this is?

Several people are reporting this issue over at gamefaqs.com. It does appear some people's PS3 are crashing or being bricked as a result of this update. I'm definitely worried now about downloading 2.40.
