Last generation, my PS2 and XBOX (both launches) had zero problems. This generation, I have gone through 3 XBOX 360's (I finally just sold the last one when MS reapired it and no longer have one) and 1 Wii (the laser went out). My 60 gig PS3 was great, but I didn't want to add it to the casualty list! It is hard to have peace of mind on console reliability this generation.

Console "relability" seems almost non-existent this generation.

I bought my 60 GB PS3 July 1, 2007 and it died with the YLOD last night...just over 2 years of service and will cost $150 for Sony to fix. And how long will that last before another $150 will be needed to fix again? Will a refurb last another 2 years? I have serious doubts.

To bad no one offers like 5-10 year warranties on these next gen consoles. That's what is needed.

I got the first launch 60gb on Nov 06 and it died (YLOD) around Dec 08. My warranty expired after the two years so instead of paying $150 I decided to try and fix it myself. I tried the "reflow" videos that are posted on youtube and was able to revive it. It lasted a few months till it the reflow process couldn't fix it anymore. I was able to save most of the games before it finally crashed.

I've been reading up on the new slim PS3 that will be coming out so I'll probably just wait for that one.

Once my 40gb PS3 stopped working. At first the console would start up, but the menu wouldn't come up, all you could see the wavy lines in the background. Eventually there was just a blank screen whenever I turned it on, and the green and yellow lights on the botoom left corner on the sytem didn't show.

They replaced a lot of things, including the motherboard or something like that.

My blue-ray drive stopped working for about 10 minutes last week so I shut the power off and started back up. Tried again and it wouldn't read a game so I popped in a regular DVD and that worked fine. So I popped in 09 The Show again and it read it and played fine after that. We'll see what happens.

That's awful! Sounds like stories you hear from the 360 owners.

yeah it's a drag. But I'm upbeat about it. At this point most of my games are unplayable because of the gahpical errors but COD WAW I can play although it kinda looks funny. But at least I can game until my coffin comes. I just hope they get it right this time. I want to get back into my trophy hunting.

Re: PS3 Repair and/or Death Thread

So are the common ps3 problems the drive and the yellow light?

I was just looking for ps3's on ebay, and there's plenty of them sold as is/broken for dirt cheap. I love a project, and this is how I got 2nd ps2 actually. I've fixed up tons of original xboxes as well. Plus, the longest lasting 360 I ever had was a non MS refurbished unit.

It looks like you can get one for under $100.

Not so sure about the Drives, but I have heard about them failing. For me I've had 1 optical port broken on my original, my first refurb got YLOD after 2 years, and the latest is a graphics card problem on the one I JUST got back. Again I hope the next refurb is playable.

well the internet has let me down. Virtually every site or forum discussing ps3 problems just suggests sending it back into sony and paying $200 or whatever. How boring.

I suppose it's worth a shot getting one and trying some general repair work on overheating or drive problems, and resell it as broken if I can't get it going. Found one for around $65 on ebay.

It's $150 to repair, which imo is a bit too much.

which is probably why some people are selling them. However, I'd at least look to fix it myself before punting it for less than $100. I've had a few system up and running with less than 20 minutes of work on them, so hopefully this is the same way.
