I hear the processes for repairing it yourself are pretty painless but because I'm not very tech savvy I payed the 149.00 (163.75) after taxes. It's a bit much yes, but I'll be glad to get a good working one back. Hopefully this is the last time I have to deal with this.

Yeah, I understand where you are coming from. I just don't get the $150 repair cost, considering it is a common faulty issue with the system getting YLOD.

To make up for the lost profit margin when you originally purchased it.

I had to send my 60GB in for repair back in March. I've had no problems since. It was out of warranty so I did have to pay the $150. I believe the drive was broken because it wasn't reading any movies, games, or CDs. I did get the same unit back so all my Rock Band files were still on it.

That's great to hear you got back your original system.

Well it looks like my luck has run out. It appears my blu ray drive is shot. In fact, my PS3 is no longer reading any discs. It had been playing fine since the last incident but after playing some today, I popped in Uncharted and it froze while loading and hasn't read a disc since. I've tried rebooting, resetting, restoring PS3 system, backing up and re-formatting, and still nothing. I bought mine used off Craigslist so there is no hope of sending it in to Sony. Does anyone know of a good repair place or service that I might send it too? I'm going to check in my area on Monday.

EDIT: Nevermind, I bought a new laser off ebay and am going to fix it myself.

Let us know how that goes. I'm curious to know the complexity.

Will do. I've been reading online and the success rate of these replacements vary. Just have to wait on the laser to get here, which will probably be about a week.

were you sure the laser died though? There's other parts that can fail that produce the same symptoms. You have to open it up and see if the laser is out.

I've been having problems with LBP since I got it from Goozex about two weeks ago. The game will lock up within the first few minutes of gameplay every time and not always at the same point. I'm also having a few lockups in other games but they seem more random, however NCAA10 which I play a lot has no issues at all. I tested LBP in another system and it works fine which obviously tells me it's a problem with my PS3 (a launch 20GB).

The moral of the story is that now that the PS3 has dropped to $299, I'm going to rip open my machine and see if I can figure out whats going on. I'm hoping it's simply a matter of dust collected inside or something simple like that. While I'm sure I could, I really don't want to mess with replacing a Blu-Ray drive or something like that.

Anyway, I'll post my findings sometime in the next week or so... hopefully it won't be laced with expletives.

Thanks, but unfortunately I got it back, hooked it up, put in call of duty, and the fan turned on into super turbo mode and the game froze. Crap! Sending #3 back now.
