I was playing Madden, system just shut off in the middle of it, red light blinking. It was 10pm, so I just said the heck with it. Two days later I fire up the system again, start Madden, don't even get to the main menus of the game when it shuts off, again, blinking red.

I checked online and discovered I had the blinking red light of death. I bought it new from a seller on Ebay, I don't think it was used or refurbished, I think I just had bad luck and got a lemon system that I didn't use enough to notice that it was messed up.

Like I said, I'm waiting for them to lower the price or lower the hard drive size with a lower price. I don't use it for anything other than gaming.
Does the light turn yellow after it blinks red or does it just stay red? It sounds like your describing the "Yellow Light of Death".

it goes green when i first turn it on,
it tries to turn blue, makes a noise, very briefly turns yellow then beeps a few times and then just keeps blinking red.

      any thoughts?

Yellow light of death for sure.

There are some third party places that'll fix it cheaper then sony but I'm not sure the reliability. There are some also though that offer guarantees (sp?) with their service.

Man these PS3s aren't as solid as I thought they were. Definitely not to RROD-level yet but still kind of disappointing.

Yeah, I worry a lot with my 60gb that it is only a matter of time........but I am going 3 years strong with it so that is good.

Re: PS3 Repair and/or Death Thread

I got a response to the BBB complaint this time this time.
They offered to replace it with a slim for $120 and repeated the $150 to get the current one fixed.
I told them they just don't get it and aren't getting another cent out of me nor can they.
I finally got them to acknowledge the YLOD is a problem but they said they don't know what causes it so aren't going to do anything.

Now that I think of it I should of asked if they enjoy spitting in their customers faces and if they perfer MS to continue to get the $10 cut of the 2-5 games I buy per month when they asked if I had any other questions.

It's like choosing between the lesser of two evils when it comes to Sony and Microsoft... a pretty poor showing from both companies when it comes to reliability this generation.

I got the BBB resoultion e-mail. Sony's claimed I told them I'd think about it. That's not what I told them at all. Have to wait for another e-mail thing now I guess or another call, hopefully I'll remember to say that other stuff this time.

After this fails (I'm assuming so anyway) I'm going the EECB route.

I just lost my 60gb to the YLOD..

I didn't have anything backed up either

Its not that much of a big deal, the part that I dislike most will be starting AC2 over.

Some guys are using the home remedy fix by getting the guide and fixing it themselves. You could also have a local guy repair your PS3 for less than what Sony charges. Your saves and info are all on your hard drive which is fine. It's the heatsink on the chip that's bad. Once that's fixed you will get all your stuff back.

You can also try and unplug your PS3 for a bit and then turn it on. It may stay on long enough for you to copy the files you want if you do choose the Sony route (long wait, high price and wiped hard drive).

My buddy just got the YLOD on his Slim. Sony is replacing it for free, he is mailing it out today, should have it back in a week to 10 days they told him.

When they replaced my PS3 when it died, they were quick about it as well.
