Blz, make sure you reformat/erase/wipe the system clean before sending it out. They say they do it for you but just to be safe...
What if it isn't repairable? I didn't mess up anything on the inside, but I can see that I can't find out how to repair it myself. Like I said, I think something messed up on the inside itself.

If anyone has seen the inside before, I could explain to you what the issue is.

I've taken mine apart as well as a few others to fix before. I might can help.

        Okay, well here's my issue:

When you open up the Blu-ray disc drive, the left and right sides of it have long black arms. They are spring-loaded, and you can push them up and down. They are both relatively engaged by opposite ends of a obtuse-shaped silver swivel (located on the bottom of the drive), so if you singly push one arm up, the other would go down on the other side.

The problem is, the left arm is not engaged with that piece. When I first disassembled my PlayStation 3, I didn't know how to even access that part of the drive. Yesterday I learned how to, and ended up getting there. However, what I see is that the right arm is attached by a black piece (part of the arm) that sticks downward toward it so the swivel can attach to it, but I see no such thing on my left arm. It's almost like it broke off. It is plastic, after all.

So the only way that Sony could fix my system is if they got another left arm in there. Thing is, that almost requires taking apart the entire system. I'm sure they wouldn't want to do all of that for one piece.

I don't think I want to take my thing apart again, because I'm just afraid I'll mess something up.

I think I understand what you're talking about. I would have to open one up again to know for sure though if you're missing a piece or not. It could be the case that the arm could have slipped off track or something or a piece could indeed have broken off. These small plastic pieces are pretty fragile sometimes.

Yeah, and again, it's the tiniest of a piece. I checked the arm, and it's definitely as on-track as it could be. The left arm is in the correct position, but the little black plastic part of the arm that connects with the swivel is gone.

That sucks Blzer, good thing that you found out the problem. How are you enjoying the Slim? Everyone that owns one has been happy coming from the previous design.

I'm happy, but it's going to be staying at home with my family when I go back to school, whether my system takes in discs at that time or not. Anyway, there are a few exceptions here and there. For one, it has a much louder disc insert/eject; also, auto-play doesn't seem to be the same as the fat PS3, where the game would start up if you started the system with a disc inside (IIRC). Also, somewhat picky but I loved the touch-button system; it complements my Samsung HDTV well and seems to just fit better. Finally, I'm able to boot a Linux OS on it.

And then I just prefer my PS3 looking like a big, bulky, fat machine and I love it more, but the slim does look very nice. I mean hey, they both play games and Blu-rays, so I can't complain either way.

As for my broken PS3, I'm just afraid they'll be hesitant to charge me only $150 because I opened my system.

Blzer, don't worry about having opened the system man. I have read around of others opening up their PS3's and Sony still took them in for repairs. They want your $150 so they don't care.......I have read where people have tried to repair their systems like yourself with no success and then just sent it in to Sony.

I hate the auto-play with the old PS3, since I would not like the game to start up after it has been inserted. Does the Slim do something different?

                    That sounds reassuring, thanks.

I hate auto-play for myself, but this is for my family when they use it. I did everything in my power to convince them to use this PS3 instead of the Blu-ray player my dad got the family for Christmas. They didn't want a "gaming system" and they didn't want to be confused by it. So I changed the theme to a Blu-ray look, bought the remote, turned off the "What's New" feature once it starts up, and turned the auto-play function on for their ease. They said they would be confused by the XMB, but I said, "Well then you would for a Blu-ray player as well, just get used to it). I mean seriously, the XMB is the easiest system in the world and you can't mess it up.

Besides, I easily convinced my dad with the hard drive (we have hundreds of hours of recorded footage so we're also upgrading to a 400GB HDD), online firmware upgrades, and media server access.

In any case, I wanted the auto-play feature to work so that they could pop the disc in when turning on the system and it would work for them. For this system, it doesn't seem to unless it is fully loaded up and then you put in the disc. Just something I don't want them to be confused by once they reach the XMB and don't know what to do. Imagine if they'd have to do what I have to do when going from a video game to a movie. I have to turn off Game Mode on my TV (to go to my picture settings for movies), dim my receiver, crank down the SW dB's, turn up the volume, select lossless if not already selected, etc. They just need to put in the disc and they're done.

That just a menu option though. You can simply change the PS3 setup so it starts at the dashboard. Am I misunderstanding you guys?

Well it sounds like they already have, then.

Here's the reason I can't send it in now, though: I switched out my 40GB hard drive for a 400GB hard drive. I'm not going to give away my 400GB hard drive to them, and this wouldn't be a problem if I just switched in my 40GB hard drive, but it's waiting for me back at SDSU when I return on the 19th. That means I can't do it for at least another 20 more days. Meh.

I noticed it getting louder, but didn't really pay much attention. I have 3 children under the age of 3, they have no access to the PS3, I just mention that to point out that I probably averaged less than 5 hours of time a week on it over the year and a half.

I was playing Madden, system just shut off in the middle of it, red light blinking. It was 10pm, so I just said the heck with it. Two days later I fire up the system again, start Madden, don't even get to the main menus of the game when it shuts off, again, blinking red.

I checked online and discovered I had the blinking red light of death. I bought it new from a seller on Ebay, I don't think it was used or refurbished, I think I just had bad luck and got a lemon system that I didn't use enough to notice that it was messed up.

Like I said, I'm waiting for them to lower the price or lower the hard drive size with a lower price. I don't use it for anything other than gaming.
