    PS3 / TV?

Okay, Madden 10 is making me want to finally upgrade to PS3, but I have an old 27" Samsung analog TV from the early 90's (still works / looks good)...

Does running a PS3 though a TV like that make any sense?

A friend of mine reccomended an Olivia 32" 1080p TV from Target that runs in the $600.00 range...

    Anybody have any other reccomendations?

What else to I need, converter cables?

Apologies on my 'cluelessness', I just really don't know this stuff...

Should I hold out for the proposed slim PS3, which is supposed to come out at $299.00 sometime soon?

    Re: PS3 / TV?

You'll need a cheap HDMI cable (get it from monoprice.com they're awesomely cheap and it's just as good as more expensive ones).

My dad just got a Vizio (40" 1080p I think), i forget how much it was at costco, i think more around 800ish.

I've got a 37" Vizio 720p and it's great for me. My living room isn't sized out where a bigger tv or 1080p are really necessary.

As for PS3 vs. PS3 slim, I dunno when it's dropping, so who knows there.

You can check out avsforum.com and I'm willing to bet people there will have had the tv's your looking into.

I've had good luck with Vizio, and they're cheaper, but other brands are also good.

        Re: PS3 / TV?

Forgot to mention in the supporter's thread, but I did have some problems with lag and my Toshiba while playing PS3...there was a fix where you connect the HDMI via the pc input hdmi port.

I dont remember exactly how I alleviated it, but there is a solution for sure.

IMO, $600 is too much for a 32 inch HDTV (1080p is a waste at 32 inches unless you're only using it as a computer monitor--to see very small print). You can get a 42 inch 720p Panasonic plasma for about $600-650. Vizio is as low as I'd want to go on the budget brands if you're sticking with LCD with prices starting at $400.

Plasmas have virtually no lag (hence they don't have response times) but you'd probably want to break it in the first 100 hours or so.

            Thanks for the advice...

I'm getting the sense that 720p is enough resolution for gaming...

What's the advantage to plasma versus LCD and how / why does it need to be broken in?

I thought it was obvious, but you don't want to play any games on a plasma...the colors burn in and you don't want that, trust me.

If you want to get a tv for gaming, go LCD.

Thanks for the input, like I said in the OP, I have no idea what to buy, hence the post...

These responses have helped a lot!

Once you get past the first 100 hours, today's plasmas are fine for gaming. You might have to worry if you bought one of the earlier plasmas. You'd have to be severly careless to get burn in and leave a static image on your tv for a long time for it to be a concern. Image retention (temporary) and burn in (permanent) are 2 totally different things.

My parents have a 3 year old Panasonic 720p plasma. Every night my mom falls asleep and leaves it on, sometimes on channels that have a static image. There has been no image retention or burn in.

And if you decide to get into blu rays, movies are much better on a plasma, IMO. Colors are more natural and the blacks are well...blacker.

                      Re: PS3 / TV?

32 inch widescreen is not very big, vertically, the screen will be similar in size to your 27. Years ago I bought a 36 inch Sony High Def widescreen tube tv (that thing weighs like 300 pounds!).

Try to get at least a 40 inch, see if you can buy a floor model, wheel and deal at the stores, they're willing to talk turkey on electronics in a lot of places, bring cash. Save up, bigger is better and don't let 720p scare you away. I could make a million dollars getting people trying to tell me the difference to the naked eye. They were closing out nice 50 inch panasonic plasmas a while back, good models too, they were 720p and looked better than a lot of 1080p sets. My 60 is 1080p, 55 is 1080i, I've seen some 720p's that look as good as mine. Save your money, get the biggest screen possible. 32 in widescreen is more like a huge computer monitor. Only get a 32 inch if you're going to be sitting 3-5 feet from it.

I have a 60 and a 55, I still want it bigger, lol. When they release a 120 or 150 inch flat lcd or plasma, I'm first in line. Projectors are cool, but I'd rather have a big slab of lcd or plasma on the wall. Something like Arnold and Sharon Stone had in Total Recall.

I watch 10 minutes of tv a day, unless the Celtics are playing.

                            Very informative!

My couch is only about 7 or 8 feet from the TV and when I play games on it I sit on a barstool that is about two feet away and lined up perfectly on the 27"...I need to go bigger, but if it was a 60", I'd have to change the whole setup of the living room...

It's about 18' by 18' with a bay window (swank, but small one and a half bedroom apartment in an artsy, urban area)...

While I'm deciding on a TV could I run a PS3 on my analog fatback?

                            Is it possible?

Would it look all that bad?

                            Thanks guys!

Got bored and was looking at Walmart's website. They have a Vizio 42inch 1080p LCD HDTV for $648. Might be what you're looking for. The next biggest size for a 1080p set jumps to almost $1100.

Like someone else has mentioned, go as big as you can within your budget. Keep in mind that some 720p plasmas can look better than cheap 1080p sets.

                              Good luck.

I'm personally waiting til Black Friday to see how far the price on 42inch models dip.
