    PS3 fan getting loud..is this a WARNING?

    Hey guys,

Any advice on this would be great.

I bought a ps3, 60 gb with backwards compatability in July 07. In July 09 it YLOD on me. I went gameless for about 4 months before finally deciding to send it in for repairs. In late November Sony sent me a refurb unit (also 60 gb bc), which I play to this day.

However, I noticed about 2 weeks ago while playing NCAA that the fan was extremely loud. So I took back NCAA (used copy) thinking it was the game. But now I notice that any game in the system for over 45 minutes will cause the fan to run loudly. Is this something I should be worried about? Should I look to "get rid of the system while I can" or do other people notice their fat ps3 fans get loud. I never noticed it before, so I'm wondering is this a regular thing for people or a warning sign. Also, when I stop the game and return to the XMB, the fan goes quiet. And when I first start a game the fan is quiet for the first 30 minutes or so.

Note: When my previous sytem YLOD on me I was COMPLETELY oblivious to any warning signs the system may have been giving me. At the time I had no idea what YLOD was and I thought that the PS3s were basically indestructible, which is one reason why I went w/ps3 in the first place. So it's not like I "remember" if the fan getting loud was something the system was doing before it conked out.

my ps3 did get really loud before it died with a red screen of death.

The fan noise was at a level that made it obviously not normal or healthy, and it only lasted like a week once it began doing it.

The fan usually kicks on when the system starts to get too hot. It's another defense of overheating, and the fan will go on a higher speed to help keep it cool.

That's what I've noticed so far.

do not worry about it at all. my ps3 used to do that all the time i originally thought something was wrong with the system but its just the fan kicking in from the lack of cool air around you. since i game in my bedroom it was always getting really hot between the tv and the system so eventually what i did was turn on the air conditioner. i have not had a problem since

I have a similar story to yours. My fan has been getting loud for the past 6 months or so. Been thinking about trading it in for a slim unit.

When my first unit went out, I was playing the Uncharted 2 beta and when I tried to exit the game my system went crazy. After I restarted the PS3 I got the YLOD.

Of the 5 fat PS3's I had, 2 got loud before dying. One was a refurb the other was my original launch 60gig. So it's a bit of a crap shoot, some won't see any issues at all while some will. The last fat ps3 I had I...

Did this. The fan was getting loud so I did the 200.00 gamestop offer and got a new slim.

Do the slim models all run silent? What is different about them as i'm sure they have some kind of fan in them as well.

Not sure, but I have two slims and I have yet to hear a fan. They are very silent. I thought I heard a fan once but it was the disc spinning.

You can replace the fan for about $20 bucks.

Have you ever had a ps3 apart, i've heard there a real pain. As far as replacing the fan i have read that some ps3's had 19 blade fans and some had 21 blade, thereby cooling better and not having to run so fast. Also where does one buy a new fan?

I just googled ps3 internal fan and came up with this. Link

When my first 60GB YLOD'd I took the thing completely apart...at the time I was hoping that there was going to be a ton of dust trapped in the fan or something that I could just clear out to get it up and running again. To my dismay, there was NO dust on the fan (or anywhere in the machine)!

I am not a handyman at all and I had no trouble taking it apart...but you MUST work slowly, patiently, and make sure to know where every screw u took out needs to go back it. Putting it together can be much more confusing than taking it apart.

I got the whole thing open but "chickened out" on the whole soldering (or whatever it's called) process. So I sent it in.

Lastly, I could not figure out how to get the blue ray drive open to get my game out that was stuck inside at the time (MLB The Show '09).

Thanks, thats what i was looking for, lol. I was mistaken in the number of fan blades, 19 is the best, quieter as it moves slower and pushes more air. Ebay also comes up with 19 blade fans as well.
