Reason why the battery let people pirate on the PSP is because Sony used it as a method to enter service mode and allegedly sent a battery and memory stick to a customer and that's how they figured out how to do it (the reality, I would suspect, is that someone from a Sony repair facility released or sold either the actual hardware or the knowledge and the "Sony accidentally sent it to a customer" story is to protect that person).

I used to make the pandora batteries for my own use back in the day. Sony did come out and say that it the Go wasn't getting an external battery due to piracy.

Not sure where you head about Sony sending out a battery and memory card by mistake, but Datel was guilty of selling batteries that would allow the PSP to go into SM. I even had bought one from them. Which would lead to the famous HEN exploit.

In reconfiguring their portable, Sony paid attention. Pandora's Battery made modding the PSP firmware, and thus software piracy, very easy. SCEA's John Koller said the PSPgo's battery was made internal-only for just that reason.

"You won't be able to rip your games and play them on the [PSPgo] system, the firmware precludes that," Koller told PlayStation Insider. "There's no external battery, so there's a number of protections put into place on the system."
Well, this worked for a little bit as people found ways around it on the Go. I won't lie, I did build my own pandora battery with the 2000/3000

Yeah, the PSP Go was still a PSP, same hardware in a different case, so the same thing that made the PSP load firmware from the memory stick would make the Go load from memory stick.

What Sony (allegedly) sent back to a customer was a jigkick, it's not quite the same as a pandora battery, but what it did was let people know how and why the PSP would go into service mode. All it took was for the battery to report back a serial number of 0xFFFFFFFF, so to make a pandora battery all you had to do was kill the eeprom with the serial number by clipping the ground pin. So they had the software from Sony and the battery trick figured and everything was open.

Datel used the public release pandora battery info to make their battery (or, more specifically, clip their own batteries and mark up the price). Some were pretty angry at Datel for basically taking others work and trying to profit from it.

So, the 20 voucher for PSN someone mentioned before is not actually in the 3G bundle, but the free PSN game is?

At the Gamestop I reserved mine at, they quit taking pre-orders last week on Thursday I believe. As far as I know, it was only available if you pre-odered it also...no units available for walk-ins.

1 more week for me! Make sure those that got the early edition give some impressions.

Just picked up Lumines, still debating on that 16gb card or not. At the moment I'm not going with digital except for a few PSP games I have as digital.

I'm still a month or so away from pulling the trigger but I was thinking about the psp/digital games I have and if I'd want them on my Vita or not. Well, they don't have trophies. So forget it.

I may put the pinball game in though. The one with Uncharted, Hot Shots, etc.. I liked that game anough not to care about trophies. Strange I know, but true.

The demo unit at our GS had "the freeze" issue. It rebooted fine though after I did the powerdown fix (hold power button for 20 seconds etc..)

I never ever played lumines... Whats it like?

I went from getting the 16 to just the 8. I'm getting the 4gb card with the starter kit also. I dont buy downloadable games much at all so I should be fine.
