I used to make the pandora batteries for my own use back in the day. Sony did come out and say that it the Go wasn't getting an external battery due to piracy.
Not sure where you head about Sony sending out a battery and memory card by mistake, but Datel was guilty of selling batteries that would allow the PSP to go into SM. I even had bought one from them. Which would lead to the famous HEN exploit.
