Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational Review - Maybe we should just be friends. = 6.0

Fortunately, other modes of play exist outside these single-player challenges, including a smooth ad-hoc mode that allows players to compete with each other in tournaments simultaneously. For anyone with Hot Shots-loving friends, this mode adds plenty of play opportunities onto the package.

If you lack the Vita-ready locals needed for a few friendly games, Hot Shots: World Invitational has several modes of online multiplayer. A huge lobby system (complete with adorable avatars) helps players get organized, and from the lobby you can book yourself in tournaments that happen several times every hour.

Alternatively, you can enter daily tournament challenges and post a score to the Hot Shots leaderboards. You only have one chance to post in this challenge, so you need to make it count. If these daily events stay consistent throughout World Invitational's life, they make this Vita launch game a more impressive experience.

    Closing Comments

Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational has a nice, colorful approach to golf and a respectable set of multiplayer options. But the disconnect between the amount of time required to plan a shot and the milliseconds needed to mess it all up sparks ample frustrations.

Wasting 30 minutes of your time with no failsafe mechanic built-in seems harsh for a game that claims to make golf more palatable to non-golfers. And overcoming difficult courses provides much less reward than the time investment deserves.

Even though Hot Shots has charmed plenty of gamers like me, I don’t think this relationship will work.
For those that have played HSG, is this review close to how you feel?

How do we chat with others, we have to be ear buds with a mic?

If I felt HSG Out of Bounds on the PS3 was a 9, I would rate the Vita version as a 8. The gameplay is just as good and offers more unlockables to work towards in single-player, but until they make it so you can create private rooms online to play with just friends (not the tournament format), then it is slightly less appealing. I don't really understand what ad hoc gaming is, but it was said that is to be used to create private rooms multiplayer games, but anytime you enter ad hoc mode your internet connection is lost so there is no way to connect online with people.

Last night I chatted with bluengold and fishepa using the Vita app called Party. You just start it up and it is a cross game chat app that lets you chat using the built-in Vita mic or a bluetooth headset. bluengold and I chatted this way while we were trying to figure out how to create a room in HSG. fishepa and I chatted this way while we were waiting in a lobby for a HSG tournament to start and then while the tournament was going on as well.

His biggest knock on the game is that it takes a while to set up a shot, and only a short time to mess it up? Um... has he ever PLAYED golf before? That IS golf.

That was a terrible review... coming from someone who should never EVER step foot on a real golf course if he can't handle spending a lot of time approaching a hole only to have it all messed up with one swing.

Nerdy, non-athletic reviewers... I tell ya... lol

For real. I lost a tournament last night because I had one bad hole that I double bogey'd. Guess I should blast the game for that. HSG could have used the touch screen controls to make setting up shots a little easier though. You still have to use buttons to pan around the course and zoom in and out. Anyone that's ever used a mapping program on their phone knows how much easier they could have made it if we could have used the touch screen.

Yeah, I struggled with that review a little bit. While I won't trash him( it is just his opinion) I did not agree with a lot his points.

HSG with trophies? Automatically gets at least an 8 and I haven't even played it yet.

Ha, yah... I tried to put the "lol" on the end to lighten that up a little... I wasn't as angry as my post came across, but that was such a strange thing to knock the game for, and did really come across like someone who hasn't played a lot of golf.... or sports.

Whatever though, as like as I like it, right?

I'm having a somewhat tough time trying to set up my Vita. I didn't sign up for the AT&T but how do I go into settings to see if it is bouncing off my router? I see the AT&T emblem on the top left at all times. Am I missing something?

Also how do I sync it up with my Ps3? Thank

James, I see the AT&T all the time also. I assumed it was connected to my U-Verse WiFi. I have yet to sign up for 3G either.

Go to settings and something like Mobile Network and disable that. The AT&T will go away and be replaced with No Service, which you can't get rid of. That is if you are talking about disabling the 3G service so only Wifi is active.

To sync with the PS3 you need to use the Content Manager on Vita. I only used it once, I had to google how to do it. I had to do some stuff on the PS3 to enable it to connect to the Vita by entering a code shown on the PS3 into the Vita.
